AirPods Pro with ANC in the test: Finally silicone

APPLE AIRPODS PRO

In the test of the AirPods Pro, the noise canceling (ANC) of the Apple headphones among in-ear headphones quickly turns out to be the market leader. And finally Apple is also using interchangeable silicone attachments, which enable a better fit. Sounds good?

Finally the things are sitting

Why the new AirPods now carry the addition “Pro” remains to be seen. But finally someone told Apple that silicone tips in different sizes make perfect sense for in-ear headphones. Sounds strange, but that’s how it is. You can actually wear the in-ears in your ear for hours without a headache or feeling of tightness. In connection with the well-functioning ANC and a balanced sound, you will receive a clear purchase recommendation from us. Oh yes – the AirPods Pro also look less embarrassing than the first two generations.

We liked that

  • Effective ANC
  • Top processing
  • Good fit
  • Well balanced sound

We didn’t like that

  • Not all functions can be used on Android
  • Only one color available

The best noise canceling headphones

We test ANC headphones with noise canceling for you at regular intervals. The results flow together in this comparison test / in this list of the best. You can also find the current test winner here.

current news

If the so-called Noise Canceling, also known as Active Noise Canceling (ANC), hadn’t already been invented, it would have to be developed immediately. Because ANC headphones can eliminate constant frequencies such as the turbine noise in the aircraft or the whirring of a fan and make even the distracting background noise of an open-plan office more bearable at the push of a button.

That’s how good the AirPods Pro’s noise canceling is

We already have more than 40 headphones tested with ANC. Headphones did not yet ensure complete peace. Those who want them have to wear hearing protection. Our test winner, an over-ear model from Sony, but actually filters out a large part of the disturbing ambient noise electronically and thus ensures pleasant silence during breaks in music. Ear-enclosing over-ear headphones have an advantage due to the concept, as outside noise is filtered through the often voluminous ear pads. Microphones and an artificially generated anti-noise do the rest.

In-ear headphones, however achieve a high degree of passive filtering through the mostly removable, differently sized attachments, which seal the ear canal and whose seat is largely responsible for a good hearing, especially bass. Anti-noise is also used here. So far, Sennheiser’s ANC has disappointed us (Momentum True Wireless), Sony (WF-1000XM3) or InLine (Pure Mobile ANC), the effect often attracted attention mainly through noise. The AirPods Pro do that differently – fortunately!

If you activate the ANC here, enter with the Sony WH-1000XM3 and the Bose QC35 a comparable effect – it becomes much quieter around you. No in-ear headphones have provided us with so much peace before. We stand at a distance of 2.5 meters in front of a switched on microwave, the ventilation of which is very loud. Both the over-ear headphones from Sony and the AirPods Pro from Apple simply erase the noise, while with the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless it remains audible.

Finally a decent transparency mode

Apple is also raising the bar for transparency mode. Here, ANC headphones loop outside noise through the microphones. The purpose should be to be able to talk to people without having to take off the headphones or take them out of your ear. This actually works with all ANC headphones, but rarely do your conversation partners sound as natural as Apple’s new AirPods do. Above all, you hear yourself naturally and not distorted or exaggeratedly loud.

The AirPods Pro can be charged wirelessly via the charging case. A corresponding charging puk is not included in the scope of delivery. This includes three different silicone attachments.

With Apple’s in-ears, you have no influence on the strength of the ANC or that of the transparency mode. Incidentally, even the transmission of own body noises is suppressed. After jogging with the AirPods Pro, we don’t perceive our own pulse as strongly as with other in-ear headphone models.

Sound test: do the AirPods Pro sound better than the AirPods?

Yes, there is an audible difference between the sound of the first two generations of AirPods and that of the new AirPods Pro. In direct comparison we hear “Frisbeee” by Bilderbuch and “King Kunta” by Kendrick Lamar alternating with the AirPods and the AirPods Pro. The bass of both pieces is more present in the new “AirPods 3”.

We don’t just like the bass better. Voices, especially those of female singers, seem more penetrating, clearer to us. Put simply: The new AirPods Pro give you goose bumps much faster and more often. So its sound is far from perfect.

You also notice the AirPods Pro that Apple wants to please as many buyers as possible and probably has to. After all, Apple’s in-ears are worn by both pubescent and Wall Street bankers and are accordingly broadly coordinated by Apple. We’re sure most buyers will be completely happy with the AirPods Pro sound. But sound sober other in-ear headphones do better.

Fit test: do the AirPods Pro hold in the ear?

We know the efforts of headphone manufacturers wie Beyerdynamicto adapt the sound to the individual preferences of the wearer with a hearing test. But in all the years at netzwelt we have not yet stumbled upon a “fit test for ear inserts” like the one with the AirPods Pro.

AirPods generations in comparison: The new AirPods Pro (on the right in the picture) are more compact than the old AirPods. The notch on the lower bar of the AirPods Pro is also easy to see. You can use this to call Siri or switch to transparency mode, depending on your preference.

The test takes about five seconds, during which you hear a few sounds – it could be Coldplay or, more likely, U2. IOS then tells you whether you have chosen the right pair from the three silicone attachments included in the scope of delivery. For the author, the paired iPhone 11 Pro gave its okay for both the medium and large essays.

The AirPods in sports

Whether you use the test or not, the interchangeable attachments that have long been established by other manufacturers are a great gain in convenience for the AirPods. Because the AirPods Pro no longer fall out of your ears so quickly like the AirPods the first two generations.

The Bluetooth headphones stay securely in the ear even during a trial headbanging, as well as when jogging. If you are worried about sweat and moisture in general, it should be said that the AirPods Pro are protected against water according to IPX4. You shouldn’t clean them under running water or wear them when swimming, but even a heavy downpour cannot harm them. Attention: The charging case is neither waterproof nor sweat-resistant.

Battery life of the new AirPods Pro

While you have the choice between a normal and a wireless charging case with the AirPods 2, the more expensive AirPods Pro always comes with the wireless charging case. You can do this like the new iPhones Simply place it on a Qi-enabled charging pad and charge the headphones and case at the same time.

Apple promises a total battery life of up to 24 hours for the AirPods Pro. We can approximately confirm this value in the test. A single charge of the AirPods lasted an average of just over four hours. You can supply the AirPods with fresh power via the charging case a little more than five times until it also needs to be recharged.

Are the AirPods Pro also compatible with Android smartphones?

The first two AirPods generations can be easily connected to Android smartphones. Instead of the “Hey Siri” command, you can even say “Okay Google”! Since the AirPods Pro are also normal bluetooth headphones there is nothing wrong with using it with Android smartphones. Simply put them into pairing mode. But you have to do without the setup process, which is better solved with the iPhone, including the indication of whether you have chosen the attachment size that is right for you. You can’t use the transparency mode so easily on Android either.

We also noticed that

  • To use noise cancellation, both AirPods must be in the ear. The transparency mode, on the other hand, also works with only one AirPods Pro plug inserted.
  • During the test period, the AirPods Pro had to be reset to factory settings twice because one AirPod did not work. A long press on the button with the charging case open and the subsequent pairing process always solved the problem.
  • The ANC of the AirPods Pro manages without noticeable noise.
