Ordering gifts online from Amazon, Media Markt, Zalando and Co. saves time and nerves during the Christmas season, this year you also minimize the risk of contracting the coronavirus. But by when do you have to order gifts to have them under the tree on Christmas Eve?
Below we give you an overview of the order and return deadlines of the most important online retailers and parcel service providers for Christmas. Because maybe you don’t just want to order, but also want to send gifts yourself.

Amazon offers different shipping options, from standard shipping to same-day delivery. You can always find the delivery date on the respective article page. Amazon told Netzwelt that customers could rely on the date mentioned and that everything would be done to ensure that the Christmas gifts were delivered on time. More than 10,000 additional seasonal workers would help the company pack and deliver the parcels this year.
Below we give you an overview with the approximate order deadlines and possible additional costs that you will have to face with different shipping methods.
- Standard Shipping: By December 21 at 11:59 PM. Free of charge for Prime customers or from an order value of 29 euros.
- Premium delivery: Until December 23 at 12 noon. Free for Prime customers, otherwise 4.99 euros.
- Same Day Delivery (available in a few cities): Until December 24th. Free for Prime customers with an order value of 20 euros or more, including 5 euros per item. Otherwise 13.99 euros.
- Prime Now (Berlin, Munich, Greater Darmstadt and Frankfurt Süd): Until December 24th at 7.45pm. Only for Prime customers, free of charge from 15 or 20 euros.
Tip: Amazon Prime members usually receive their goods faster. As a new customer, you can test the Amazon Prime service for 30 days free of charge. It is therefore worthwhile to rate Prime Members quickly before Christmas.
If you don’t like your gifts, the mail order company offers an extended return period until January 31, 2021. This applies to items that were ordered from Amazon between October 1 and December 31, 2020.
Returns at Amazon: This is how you send goods back
If you want to return goods on Amazon, this is possible in principle, but not always free of charge. Netzwelt tells you how you can send items back to Amazon if you don’t like them and how high the costs for a return are.
Note: The rule only applies to purchases that have been processed directly at Amazon.de, to orders sent by Amazon from third parties and to items that are offered with the Prime logo and are sold and sent by third parties.
Things are different for orders from the Marketplace. The return period is usually 14 or 30 days, depending on the article and dealer.
