Folding smartphone, dual screen, tablet? Difficult to characterize precisely the strange Surface Duo from Microsoft, this “smartphone” with two screens which is not really one. Nevertheless, we will soon be able to make an opinion ourselves, since the Redmond firm will launch its Surface Duo on February 18 for sale in France, a few months after its release in the United States, last September. It is also an opportunity to know the French price of the device, which will only be sold on the manufacturer’s official store, the Microsoft Store, at Darty and at Fnac: 1 549€ en version 128 Go, and 1 649€ en version 256 Go. It’s expensive, very expensive, especially since across the Atlantic, where the Surface Duo has been available for several months, Microsoft has lowered its price by passing it to … $ 999.

It remains to convince potential customers of the usefulness of the Surface Duo. The device was indeed presented in the fall of 2019, and therefore has characteristics that are almost three years old. We thus find a SoC Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm, and the “smartphone” is therefore not compatible with 5G, a heresy for a product sold so expensive, in 2021. Same observation regarding its dual screen, at the time when even the excellent folding screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 – an expensive but technically flawless device – recently took the limelight with Oppo’s incredible sliding-screen smartphone concept, the Oppo X 2021. As for the rest of the characteristics, nothing to justify this price: we are entitled to a single front photo sensor of 11 MP, and a battery just a little bit of 3577 mAh. It remains to be seen whether the software and Microsoft’s promises to increase the productivity of a Surface Duo user will be kept.
