Maintaining a secure website, key to achieving visibility and increasing visitor confidence

Global trade and business models are in the process of adapting to the digital world, which is now a reality. In this sense, 62.6% of Spaniards made purchases through the Internet in 2020, compared to 58% who did so in the previous year, according to the Survey on Equipment and Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Homes, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics. We are, therefore, facing an upward trend in which online stores are gaining an increasingly important weight for consumers.

This predisposition towards electronic commerce in Spain is also reflected in the latest study that we have carried out at Hubside in collaboration with IPSOS, which reveals that 77% of Spaniards make online purchases at least once a month.

For this reason, every day more people and businesses decide to take the step and create their own e-commerce to offer their products and services over the Internet. In this line, administrators have a great advantage today, and that is that thanks to the services of creating web pages and online stores, it is no longer necessary to have technical or computer knowledge to design their website and maintain all the guarantees of security. This last aspect is key and at Hubside we never fail to emphasize the importance of avoiding taking risks in the digital environment, regardless of the use, content and purpose of the website to be created.

To guarantee the security of a website or an e-commerce, our recommendation is to trust a content creation and management platform that offers a secure digital environment, through compliance with the General Data Protection Law (GDPR), which protects data and offers security to all users. In the same way, the companies that offer support to web administrators must have a team of security experts who know and are up to date with all the dangers that users face on the network.

Main dangers in the network

Specifically, the most common attacks are DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) or denial of service attacks, which consist of subjecting a website to a very large number of simultaneous requests until they drop and stop offering service to users due to saturation. In this sense, cybercriminals target both SMEs and multinationals and is that Amazon itself claimed to have detected one of the largest DDOS attacks in history in February 2020, when the company managed to cope with a 2.3 Tbps attack .

Another risk that individuals and companies face is the image deconfiguration, which consists of a hacker accessing the website and modifying the content in order to sell their own products or invite website visitors to download some type of virus. This attack is not only suffered by web pages, but it can also occur in social networks, when a hacker accesses a third party account, pretends to be the owner of the social network and publishes content in it, impersonating his identity for the purpose malicious. These dangers can mean great losses, as happened to Mark Zuckerberg, who suffered identity theft on his social networks on Twitter and Pinterest in 2012, after a group of cybercriminals seized 117 million LinkedIn passwords, among which There was that of the CEO of Facebook and, when they tested it on other social networks, they saw that he used exactly the same.

To this type of attacks are also added the Ransomware, a type of malicious software that restricts users’ access to their operating system or files and demands a ransom payment in exchange for their recovery. One of the most recent Ransomware attacks was against the Japanese company Canon, which last August suffered a theft of data from the multinational’s servers caused by the Maze ransomware. This attack resulted in a loss of at least 10 Tbytes of data and security databases, which contained personal data of Canon employees.

Another of the most notorious hacker attacks in recent years was the one suffered by Telefónica in 2017 at its corporate headquarters, which caused the restriction of access to its files and, through which, the authors requested a financial ransom. Finally, the company managed to neutralize the attack, which had managed to spread to more than a hundred countries where the company had a presence.

A similar case occurred just a few days ago, when the Polish video game developer CD Projekt RED suffered a seizure which ended with the distribution of the source code of the GWENT video game on the web. The hackers also placed a bid on a forum to sell the source code for Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 and more of the company’s games, which was a big problem for the company.

The Phishing, another type of computer fraud, enters our system when we click on an insecure link that comes to us via email. Faced with these risks, at Hubside we always recommend consulting with our team of experts to avoid any type of breach in our system that generates a vulnerability for the administrator or the visitor. ING Spain already warned about this type of attack in mid-January of this year, when it warned about a phishing attack that reached its users through email or SMS with a dangerous link.

In short, for the administrators of personal pages and online stores to have a website with all the security guarantees, it is essential to have a trusted partner and work hand in hand with a team of experts who can guide and advise the creator before any potential risk.
