TikTok, one of the most popular social networks of the moment, has decided to join forces with the NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association – National Association of Eating Disorders) to help young people with eating disorders find the help they need. This takes the form of a week dedicated to eating disorders and the integration of two new features in the application. Indeed, if a user searches for eating disorders, TikTok immediately offers the phone number of the NEDA association, as well as support tips for people with eating disorders or who know a loved one who suffers from it. These measures are not intended to moderate “dangerous” content but rather to help people who need it by redirecting them to reassuring information and help center numbers.

L’application is regularly singled out on this subject for some time. Many criticize the dangerous challenges, or highlight the beauty and sex appeal of designers. The videos about weight loss are the most problematic since they could influence the youngest users of the platform to fall for eating disorders. With this awareness week in collaboration with the association, which will last from February 22 to 28, the #WhatIEatInADay content (what i eat in a day) or #EmotionalEatingTips (Tips for those who eat their emotions, under the influence of emotion) will be accompanied by a paragraph warning of the dangers of eating disorders. This initiative will perhaps allow the application to shed its image of “harmful network” which has stuck to it for several months.
