Netflix will automatically download the shows you might like

Announced in December 2019, the “download for you” feature is finally coming to all Android smartphones. It allows you to watch offline, a selection of series and movies supposed to please you, and is based on the platform’s algorithm.

In December 2019, Netflix was experimenting with a new feature to make life easier for mobile spectators. More than a year later, it finally arrives on all terminals running Android. Baptized “Downloaded for you”, it is based on the platform’s recommendation algorithm. Concretely, Netflix will identify content that you might like in its catalog, and then add them to your library. You can then choose from the selection and watch them offline. Concretely, if you liked The Bridgertons Chronicle, Netflix will automatically be able to download films and series of the same genre, for example Gossip Girl or the adaptation ofPride and Prejudice. For the series, a few episodes will be available, just to see if you stick to the plot. According to TechCrunch, all content available on the platform will be downloadable, not just original creations. However, some content, which was not already available for download, will be unavailable. Blame it on licenses that prevent Netflix users from benefiting from a digital copy. To activate “Download for you”, just go to the application settings. There, it will be possible to determine the amount of storage to allocate to it. You can thus decide to devote between 1, 3 et 5 GB. Downloads will only be launched once your smartphone is connected to WiFi, in order to save the data of your packages.

Netflix continues to improve the user experience of its app. With “Download for you”, it hopes to make life easier for nomadic spectators who would not have access to a connection worthy of the name, especially during journeys. It is also a way for the firm to impose itself in certain countries, where the cellular connection does not allow to watch a series in streaming. Netflix noted that in the United States, the feature has been used extensively. More broadly, Reed Hastings’ firm hopes to recommend more new productions. “We want to make it easier for you to discover your next new favorite series, whether you are online or not” said Patrick Flemming, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix in a press release. For now, it is only available on Android smartphones. The deployment will be gradual and not all phones will be able to access it immediately. For iOS, you will have to wait a little longer, it will be available during this year 2021.
