On March 29, Xiaomi will give yet another conference to unveil some new products, including, to begin with, the premium variants of the Xiaomi Mi 11, the Mi 11 Pro and the Mi 11 Ultra. The brand has also confirmed that the latter will have an ISOCELL GN2 sensor from Samsung, the largest smartphone sensor on the market. In addition to these Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra, another much more innovative product should also be presented during the event on March 29: a new Mi MIX.

This astonishing range generally allows Xiaomi to push innovation to its peak. The first Mi Mix, launched in 2016, was thus one of the first smartphones to adopt the edge-to-edge screen, while its competitors at the time were still entitled to wide bezels. More recently, the firm presented the Mi Mix Alpha, an astonishing smartphone whose screen covered almost the entire device to its back, but it has unfortunately never been marketed.

A true concentrate of technologies?

In 2021, what is Xiaomi preparing for us with its Mi Mix? Previous rumors believe that the device to be unveiled on March 29 should be a folding smartphone, the very first of the brand. According to Ross Young, founder of DisplaySearch and DisplaySupplyChain, the product would go by the name of Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 Pro, and another leaker claims on Weibo that the device would have ultra-fast charging at 120W and an invisible front camera, under the screen.

That’s already a lot of innovations for a single product, but now the brand is teasing another extremely promising novelty: the arrival of technology Liquid Lens on the next Mi Mix. Concretely, it is a liquid photo lens, which would allow a single camera to act as a wide-angle, telephoto or even macro. Due to its liquid properties, the lens could be deformed and thus change focal length if necessary thanks to electric currents. There would therefore no longer be any need for mechanical movements, which would also drastically improve the speed of focusing. It remains to be seen how this will work in practice, but it is promising.
