In 2011, Scotland set itself the goal of meeting 100% of its electricity needs through renewable green energies by 2020. Almost a decade later, the results are there: according to the trade body of Scotland’s renewable energy industry (Scottish Renewables), the country has successfully fueled 97.4% of its electricity needs thanks to renewable energies. If we can not say that the objective has really been achieved, it is still a great achievement. Especially since the figure recorded a clear increase compared to 2019, when it peaked at “only” 89%.

According to Scottish Renewables Managing Director Claire Mack, this goal has enabled Scotland to “More than tripling its production of renewable electricity” in ten years. A production that now allowssupply more than 7 million homes with electricity per year, reports the Engadget site. Thanks to green energy, mainly wind and hydro, the country hopes to continue its momentum, and has also launched a new objective: that of meeting 50% of national needs in electricity, heating and transport thanks to energy. renewable by 2030. An ambitious bet, since for the moment, Scotland uses only 6.5% of green energy to ensure the heating of its inhabitants (non-electric). “Industry and government must continue to work together, in order to reach our full potential, and achieve global carbon neutrality by 2045 ”, assured Claire Mack. For her part, Holly O’Donnell, head of climate and energy change at WWF Scotland called for imitating Joe Biden on accelerating the electrification of the fleet across the country, and put in place grants to encourage Scots to rely on electricity for their heating needs.
