SEGA was voted best editor of the year 2020 thanks to its ports and reissues of Persona 5 Royal and Yakuza 0.
For the eleventh consecutive year, Metacritic, the famous aggregator of notes, published his ranking of best video game publishers. With great surprise, it is SEGA which climbed to the first place of the podium in 2020, with a jump of 17 places compared to the year 2019. Metacritic gave him an excellent Metascore of 81.6. In fact, his average is a little lower than that attributed to number 2, namely Annapurna, who obtained the Metascore of 81.9. However, Metacritic clarified that SEGA’s ranking has been boosted following its two successful games released in 2020, namely Person 5 Royal and Yakuza 0, both of which are in the top 5 rated games of the year.
Metacritic also points out that a lot of SEGA’s success comes from already existing games that have been ported to other media or simply improved upon, which is the case with Person 5 Royal and Yakuza 0 but also of Two Point Hospital and Bayonetta, which were respectively ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in February 2020, and to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in February 2020 as well. However, the Editor’s Best Completely Original Game of the Year 2020 was 13 Sentinels : Aegis Rim, released on September 22, 2020 for PlayStation 4, although the game was released in Japan almost a year earlier.
This is the second time that SEGA has found itself in first place in the ranking, the first time being in 2015. While some believe that SEGA deserves its place as the first publisher, others consider that the ports and other re-releases of video games are not no new creations, and therefore should not be taken into account in the publisher’s rating. It remains to be seen if SEGA will continue its momentum in 2021 or if the company will experience a significant drop in the ranking, as happened in 2019.
