Disney + will be able to add Sony films to its catalog, after the first broadcast reserved for Netflix.
Netflix will ultimately not be the only platform to stream Sony films in the United States. In early April, the two companies announced that they had signed a large-scale partnership. Concretely, after their release in theaters and on DVD, Netflix will be able to add all the films of the studio to its catalog. On the other hand, in the event that Netflix does not wish to broadcast a film, it can be retrieved by another platform. This also applies to feature films that will not go through the dark rooms box. But obviously, Sony intends to play on two fronts by also allying with Disney +. Once this first exclusive operation is completed, the platform of the firm with big ears will also be able to add them. to its catalog. Keith Le Goy, president of distribution and global networks at Sony Picutres Entertainment called the agreement “revolutionary”. He specifies that this one “Cements a key part of our film distribution strategy, which is to maximize the value of each of our films, making them available to consumers across all windows with a wide range of key partners”.
Spider-Man Comes Home
This strategy will therefore allow Disney to add several Sony-stamped franchises to its streaming offer, but not only. It also plans to broadcast them through its TV channels, such as FX, Freeform and the ABC network. Among the licenses concerned, we find in particular Jumanji, Hotel Transylvania and especially the franchise Spider-Man with Tom Holland. Indeed, so far, the superhero was the only one that could not be broadcast on the platform. With this agreement, Disney + will not only be able to add the first two films but also broadcast the third opus after its theatrical release. This will also apply for Venom and the next film centered on Morbius. For the other two Spider-Man trilogies, all produced by Sony, we will have to wait a little longer to find out. For now, the two companies have remained fairly discreet about the productions concerned.
This agreement will be effective from 2022 to 2026. If Sony and Disney have not disclosed the amount of this transaction, sources familiar with the matter estimate that the agreements with Netflix and Disney add up to more of $ 3 billion.
