Updates to an operating system go beyond adding new features. Along with them, more often, security updates are also integrated, which are intended to make digital life more bearable, especially in online contexts.
In the particular case of Windows, a security update, relative to Windows Defender, is wreaking havoc with disk space, monopolizing it indiscriminately. Here we will explain the reason for this situation and how to solve this problem.
A Windows Defender bug is leaving some computers out of disk space
The bug present in the official Windows 10 antimalware tool was reported through the Microsoft support forum by multiple users. Among those publications, you can find some that account for up to 30 GB hoarded by more than 950 thousand files generated by Windows Defender.
This problem occurs on all computers that have Windows 10 with version 18100.5 of the Microsoft antivirus engine, regardless of the particular version of the operating system that is running, including Windows Server.
Those who have this specific version of Defender on their computer, configured as the default antivirus and that also keep the antivirus protection active in real time, are the only ones affected by this situation, which at a very accelerated rate, generates a large number of files small (just one or a couple of kilobytes, hopefully) in the direction C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows DefenderScansHistoryStore.
On the one hand, cleaning this folder manually is not a definitive solution, as it would not interrupt the dynamics after the problem. On the other hand, disabling virus protection is not a true solution either, as it would expose your computer to threats.
A new version of the Windows Defender engine, specifically 18100.6, arrived with the solution for this problem. However, its deployment is not being immediate for all Windows installations.
To verify the version of the engine of this integrated antivirus system, simply enter the Windows Security application, access the Settings section in the lower left section, and then enter the About section, which presents the versions of the four main technologies involved in this tool. On the information that must be paid attention is the second one that appears on the list, the engine version.
