Withings has just enriched its connected scale, Body Cardio, with a new cardiovascular health index: Vascular Age. This new, world-first feature, developed with top-notch cardiologists, provides users with an easy-to-understand, daily assessment of their arterial health.
From a simple weigh-in, users can have an estimate of their arterial age, based on a comparison to measurements of other users in their age range, to see if it is optimal, normal, or non-optimal. BMI, complete body analysis, heart rate measurement and now evaluation of vascular age, Body Cardio transforms the morning weigh-in into a real “health” gesture.
Better prevention of cardiovascular health at home, a public health issue
With Vascular Age, Withings has created an easily understandable index to help users better understand their health and help them adopt a healthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization, they are, in fact, responsible for 17.9 million deaths worldwide each year, or 31% of deaths. In France, cardiovascular pathologies are the second leading cause of death, just after cancer and are the cause of around 150,000 deaths per year and 400 deaths per day. The possibility of monitoring one’s cardiovascular health at home, with medical grade data, is therefore a real public health issue.
Determine vascular age
Vascular Age is based on Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV), a measure of arterial stiffness that is a key indicator of heart health. Frequently used in clinical medicine, it allows, in fact, to detect, upstream, the first signs associated with cardiac incidents and health problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol, organ failure, cognitive function. reduced, Alzheimer’s disease, the risk of stroke and heart attack.
The PWV is the rate at which the vibrations generated by the beating of the heart travel along the artery aorta and the arterial tree. To determine this, Body Cardio calculates the time it takes for the pulse wave to travel from the aorta in the heart to the blood vessels in the feet using ballistocardiography and impedance plethysmography technologies.
Launched in 2016 and having already made it possible to perform more than 80 million measurements, Body Cardio allows Withings today to have one of the largest databases of VOPs in the world. This has, in addition, the advantage of being very representative of the general population. To determine vascular age, Withings’ algorithm analyzes a person’s BPV measurement against the measurements of other users of their age range and physical characteristics. The Vascular Age makes it possible to know the real age of its arteries (+/- compared to the chronological age of the person) but also to know if it is optimal, normal or not optimal. The algorithm was developed with Professor Stéphane Laurent, renowned cardiologist from the Georges Pompidou European Hospital, who is the source of numerous publications in clinical medicine.
The importance of vascular age
Arteries generally age more slowly than the rest of the body. However, they can age faster when they are constantly affected by harmful elements such as cigarette smoke or foods high in saturated and trans fatty acids. If the vascular age is significantly higher than a person’s actual age, that person is at greater risk of developing cardiovascular problems later. Often used as a well-being tool, vascular age is a given recognized by the scientific community.
The Withings Vascular Age function allows you to obtain cardiovascular assessments in less than 30 seconds thanks to a measurement that is easy to understand and to follow over time. For a quick overview, during weighing, the Body Cardio screen displays the person’s condition: optimal, normal, or non-optimal vascular age. The Withings Health Mate app displays additional information such as vascular age, and exercise and nutrition tips to improve cardiovascular health.
The Withings Body Cardio brings together the most advanced features on the market to help people achieve their weight loss and maintenance goals. In addition to weight and BMI, Body Cardio analyzes the body composition (percentage of fat, muscle, water, and bone mass) of the user through a scientific technique called biometric impedance. She also measures her heart rate at each weigh-in.
The Body Cardio can be synchronized via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Its advanced features also include automatic recognition of 8 users from the same family, pregnancy mode, and a rechargeable battery with an autonomy of up to 1 year.
