It’s confirmed, the iPad Pro M1 is a real powerhouse

The iPad Pro 2021 shows the fangs in early benchmarks, thanks to the M1 chip.

Last month, Apple introduced a number of new products, including the AirTag, a iMac 24″ with M1 chip, or a new one Apple TV 4K. But the highlight was the iPad Pro, whose new iteration brings a real tidal wave of new features, including a mini-LED screen on the large model, the arrival of 5G and Thunderbolt, but also, and above all, the presence of an M1 chip. We therefore suspected that the iPad Pro 2021 would offer excellent performance, but it would be even more impressive than expected according to this benchmark.

When the iPad Pro flirts with the 16 ″ MacBook Pro

In benchmarks seen on Geekbench 5 and relayed by MacRumors, Apple’s new premium tablet shows the extent of its performance. Thus, the iPad Pro 2021 gets a score of 1,719 in single core, and 7,326 in multicore. By comparison, a 2020 iPad Pro equipped with an A12Z chip recorded 1,117 in single core and 4,696 in multicore, an increase of almost 50% from one generation to the next!

Better yet: in terms of raw performance on the CPU side, the new iPad Pro overtakes the most high-end laptop sold by Apple, the 16-inch MacBook Pro, equipped with an Intel Core i9-9880H processor, with 8 cores and clocked at 2.3 GHz. It only got a score of 1,113 in single core and 6,774 in multicore. Nevertheless, it should retain the advantage on the GPU side, but by little. In addition, unlike the 16 ″ MacBook Pro, the iPad Pro does not have a fan, and its performance may suffer under heavy use, even if the MacBook Air M1 – also without fan – seems to get away with it properly.

Obviously, these are only indications of performance, and not a range of possibilities offered by the new iPad Pro. There is still the question of the OS and applications capable of taking advantage of the power of the M1. There might just be movement on that side at the time of the next WWDC. The event could be an opportunity for Apple to lift the veil on its next version of iPadOS, which, we hope, will finally succeed in taking its tablet to another court.
