Asus Zenfone 8 Series, the compact surprise

After, rumors Asus has just formalized its two new smartphones from the Zenfone 8 Series, here are the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip.

After the leaks comes confirmation. After the new Asus ROG Phone 5 (see our test HERE), it’s the Zenfone’s turn to make their mark. It’s official, here is the new Zenfone 8 series and as for its predecessors, we are entitled to two smartphones which arrive much earlier than the Zenfone 7 last year. Indeed, while the latter were only available at the end of the summer, the new Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip are arriving in the second quarter of 2021.

On the other hand, this year, Asus focused on the Zenfone 8 and its new compact design. Exit therefore the normal version with a Pro version but a compact version and a version with the famous Asus Flip Camera. The new Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip are high-end smartphones and are positioned against competitors such as the OnePlus 9, Oppo Find X3 Neo, Apple iPhone 12 or even Samsung Galaxy S21.

The Zenfone 8, all compact

The surprise this year is therefore the Zenfone 8 which has the advantage of being compact. Indeed, until now, in the Android universe, only Sony was really present with its Xperia 5. Samsung had initiated the movement a few years ago with the Galaxy S10E but had not repeated its test the following year. . The Samsung Galaxy S21 remains compact in itself but it is not a true compact smartphone.

While we expected a compact version with always the Flip Camera because it remains the differentiating innovation of Asus, the Taiwanese manufacturer has chosen a more classic design with a 5.9-inch AMOLED punch screen and a rectangle-shaped photo block on the back. As for the screen, if it is not integral, it has the advantage of offering a refresh rate of 120Hz.

The design has been studied to offer a happy medium between the iPhone 12 mini that Asus still finds too small and the Sony Xperia 5 II considered too high. The design was thought to be less than 70mm wide, which allows an optimization for the grip. Because there is no Flip Camera, the smartphone is IP65 / IP68 certified. Side characteristics, high-end requires, we find a high-end SoC since it is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. And for the battery, it is 4000mAh. On the photo side, we are in the classic with a standard wide-angle and an ultra-wide angle. Note that the main camera offers optical stabilization.

The Zenfone 8 Flip, the small evolution of the Zenfone 7 Pro

This year, everything has been oriented around the Zenfone 8. Also, the Zenfone 8 Flip has changed very little compared to the Zenfone 7 Pro. If there has been an update of certain technical characteristics and the finish, let’s be honest, it’s quite similar in the end. We even find the faults that we mentioned with the Zenfone 7 Pro test. Nothing blocking or other in itself but we would have liked a bigger evolution.

Typically, we find a screen with a refresh rate of 90Hz only while even the Zenfone 8 offers 120Hz, there is always a noticeable difference between the two speakers of the smartphone and if we still appreciate the Flip Camera, it is is exactly the same as last year. So yes, there has been progress in terms of software and algorithms, but it’s exactly the same hardware. Afterwards, don’t make us say what we haven’t said, it’s still a very good smartphone but clearly, those who have invested in a Zenfone 7 will see no reason to update.
