Apple iPad Pro 11 M1 test, power and mobility

Apple intends to push the Apple Silicon M1 and here it is landing on the new Apple iPad Pro. Here is our review of the Apple iPad Pro 11 M1.

In the world of tablets, Apple’s iPad Pro remain the benchmark, they are powerful, well-finished and offer an unrivaled software library. If Android tablets often try to compete with a hardware part that is nothing to be ashamed of, it is on the software part that Apple dominates any Android tablet.

This year, during its spring event, Apple took a new step with its two new iPad Pro. Indeed, already strong in their hegemony and their power, the new Apple tablets are even more powerful since they embed the new Apple Silicon M1 processor, the same that equip the recent MacBook Pro, Mac mini or more recently the new ones. iMac in different colors.

We spent more than a week with it, here is our test of the iPad Pro 11 M1 and we can say it right away, it’s a success.

On the packaging side, we find the white rectangular cardboard box and as is still the case (maybe longer), we are entitled to a USB-C to USB-C cable, a 20W USB charger from the manuals. ‘use for a first grip. Nothing very original in itself. We remind you that the iPad Pro 11 M1 supports the second generation Apple Pencil and that it is optional.

For its price, count from 899 euros for the 11-inch version and 1219 euros for the 12.9-inch version. The minimum capacity is 128GB and you can go up to 2TB if you are willing to pay the high price.

Design, Photo, Screen and Audio

Some will criticize the lack of novelties in the design of the new iPad Pro, on our side, we find it difficult to change something that is at its peak in terms of design and practicability. The proportions are ideal in themselves for a tablet and on our 11-inch version, the thickness of 5.9mm and the weight of 468g allow you to take it everywhere and not to smell the product in use. The finish is excellent as one is entitled to expect from an Apple product.

As for the photo block, we find exactly the same block as the iPad Pro 2020 with its LiDAR sensor. It is clearly the best tabletphone on the market, but in the end we only use it very little on our side. For those who have not followed, we remain at the level of the iPhone 11, which is very good for a tablet in real life. On the front, we obviously find FaceID but above all a front camera capable of recording in 1080p and especially with an ultra wide-angle lens (122 °). The latter does not display in ultra wide-angle but allows the introduction of the Center Stage technology that we have been able to test with FaceTime, Zoom or even Webex. Basically, Center Stage uses ultra wide angle and machine learning to recognize the user and track them, which allows for a kind of tracking. Impressive.

Regarding the screen, we have so far only tested the 11-inch version. As a result, we could not yet discover the new Mini-LED panel of the 12.9-inch version. The difference will not be felt in the colors or others but especially in the brightness, which will impact the blacks and give them deeper on the 12.9-inch version. Also, from a creative perspective, it will mainly be used by those who need to work on HDR content. On the 11-inch version, we find the screen of the 2020 model and that we do not say what we have not said. It is an excellent screen with perfect colorimetry and very good brightness. It has often been used as a reference for the colors in the photo. Like every year, we will rail against the 4: 3 screen but for the consumption of content both in portrait and landscape mode, it’s unbeatable. It’s kind of a happy medium.

And finally, sound side, on the iPad Pro 11 M1, there are 4 speakers which are excellent and allow to have a balanced and powerful sound. Like in previous years, it’s the only tablet that doesn’t require us to switch to headphones or earphones. Afterwards, let’s be honest, if we want better immersion, nothing can compete with good wireless headphones or a good wireless headphones. Yes, we are talking about wireless devices because the iPad Pro 11 M1 does not offer a jack.

Apple Pencil et Magic Keyboard

In recent years, when we talk about iPad, we can no longer dissociate Apple tablets from Apple Pencil. With the announcement of the new iPad Pro, it was thought that the Cupertino company would present a new generation of Apple Pencil. This is not the case and in absolute terms, on our side, we do not know what more Apple could have brought because the 2nd generation of Apple Pencil works very well. So, no surprises on that side.

And we obviously find the Magic Keyboard, the keyboard / trackpad combo for the iPad Pro and the latest iPad Air. It is clearly one of the best accessories that we have seen. We clearly find the price too high, but once you’ve used it for productivity, it’s hard to go back. Moreover, we think that once tried and adopted, we easily do without a laptop. We did not have the iPad Pro 12.9 M1 to test it with an old Magic Keyboard but the first feedback we saw on the internet, it was a false debate in the end.

M1, 5G, WiFi 6, Performances and Autonomy

As much, on a smartphone, we will pay attention to 5G, as much, we do not necessarily pay attention on a tablet. Now, for those who are ultra-nomadic, 5G will be a big plus and in the case of the iPad, we have not noticed any impact on autonomy when 5G is on standby. On the other hand, as one might expect, in pure 5G, it consumes more and it may be necessary to be careful but in the majority of cases on our side, WiFi was within range so it was not felt by compared to last year’s models. Likewise, we appreciated the arrival of WiFi 6, which is increasingly practical because we are starting to find it more often.

As for performance, we won’t surprise you too much… The new iPad Pro M1 has the Apple Silicon M1 on board, it is the same SoC as the latest MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac. It is a beast of pure power. Already we had nothing to complain about compared to the iPad Pro of last year, this year, they are 50% faster in terms of computing power and 40% faster in terms of graphics. Whether it’s with games or greedy apps like Lightroom or LumaFusion, not a single slowdown. The editing of a video in 4K was done so smoothly that we began to dream of a Final Cut Pro version iPadOS. We were also able to preview Divinity: Original Sin II Definitive Edition and we can say it, we are in console quality on a tablet with a native game. It’s impressive. After that, there is obviously cloud-gaming like Stadia or Xbox Game Pass, but it depends on a very good internet connection.

And finally, a little word about iPadOS that hasn’t changed much. We will have more news at WWDC next June. On the other hand, Apple has brought a little novelty with Center Stage, which also justifies the new FaceID camera with a viewing angle of 122 °. This ultra wide-angle thus allows Facetime or compatible applications to be able to follow the user (s) in front of the camera. This is not new since the Facebook Portal or more recently the Amazon Echo Show 10 already allow it, but it is a great first on a tablet and above all, it does not require a motor. Convenient.
