The last day has been full of news from Apple. Its streaming music service, Apple Music, has not been left out of the news and implemented a long-awaited feature.
From now on, devices that have the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, tvOS and macOS will be able to listen to audio tracks without loss of quality through this service.
Audio transmitted through digital media is usually exposed to a loss of quality caused by compression of these records, necessary to facilitate the transport of these files through the network or other media.
With the passage of time and the advancement of technologies, the development of high-quality, lossless audio formats has become more sophisticated to the point of making them streaming-friendly. Sample of this is Tidal, whose emblem is this format and other platforms that are looming over the same horizon, to which today it is integrated Apple Music.
Apple Music rolled out its lossless audio listening mode
Through a publication issued today on its technical support portal, Apple made official the deployment of this function in its music service, after announcing its launch during the recent WWDC.
Excluding HomePod devices for now, which will be served through a future update, if you have the most up-to-date version of your corresponding operating system on the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV 4K, lossless audio is now possible. via Apple Music.
Users subscribed to Apple Music can access this function without any additional requirement, which has been rolled out gradually, through an update that is activated from Apple’s servers.
To enable this function, it is necessary to access the settings of the Music application, from the Settings app of each Apple device. There, it is now possible to find a section dedicated to lossless audio, which offers qualities ranging from 16 bits / 44.1 kHz to 24 bits / 192 kHz.
New Music settings on iOS
The audio offered is distributed through Apple’s own implementation of the AAC codec, developed to guarantee, according to the company, an audio “Practically indistinguishable from the original studio recording”. This applies to the entire Apple Music catalog. At the same time, they also released a catalog entitled Apple Digital Masters, which contains mixes made exclusively for this platform.
Another important improvement in the sound quality of the service is the implementation of a technology developed together with Dolby Atmos, called Spatial Audio, which offers surround and multidirectional sound.
For the highest quality offered, it is important to note that a digital to analog audio converter device is required to take advantage of the adequate deployment of that wider range of frequencies than conventional ones.
Similarly, it is important to remember that high-quality and lossless audio is considerably heavier, so it is worth taking this into account when managing the space of each device and the consumption of mobile data.
