Elon Musk said the top variation of the luxury sedan, which kicks off on Thursday, went so well that there was no need for an even rougher monster. Others are less optimistic.
After quite a few months of slippage, it seems: on June 10, Tesla will begin the refurbishment Model S Long Range and Model S Plaid delivery to customers in the United States, and some lucky (and fairly affluent) owners, or influence you can attend the related Fremonti event in person, which will also be broadcast online on Thursday. Elon Musk promises a spacecraft with an unrivaled driving experience and set multiple records among production cars (acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 2 seconds, quarter-mile acceleration record), but the 628km WLTP range is also promising per charge.

The Plaid would have bid for this from 2022 with a range of + 840 km and even higher performance, according to tips, with the brand’s own 4680 battery cells, which would have meant redesigning the platform on a structural basis. Musk said the smooth Plaid, however, did so well based on tests and optimizations in recent months that Plaid + is not needed. Many, of course, try to read between the lines and are less optimistic: specifically, the realization of the 4680 cell production is suspected to be the real reason – and Model Y in Berlin and Texas have a “prerogative” to these batteries, as these factories designed for use.
A Reuters however, Tesla will simply not be ready for mass production of cells by 2022, so all variations of the Model S and X will remain in the somewhat turbocharged but today spread cell format, making Plaid + jump. The role of the latter was more symbolic, by the way: to launch a luxury sedan that picks up the gloves of any exclusive street racing car and long-distance petrol vehicle, and shows its fresh rival, the convincing specifications. Lucid Airnek, but this does not happen.
There’s the new one in Tesla’s bag, though Roadster, the production version of which Musk promised this summer, with a range of over 1000 km and a SpaceX missile package variation with an acceleration of 1.1 seconds to 60 mph. It’s possible that the Roadster will pay its respects on Thursday, and then no one will miss the Model S Plaid + – except, of course, those who pre-ordered it.
