Roblox sued by music producers

The game is said to be using songs by very famous artists in a completely illegal way and is owed nearly $ 200 million.

The National Music Publishers’ Association (National Association of Music Producers or NMPA) filed a complaint against Roblox, the company behind the eponymous game. According to David Israelite, president of the association, Roblox would have won “ hundreds of millions of dollars by requiring users to pay every time they download music to the platform – taking advantage of young people’s misunderstanding of copyright – and taking hardly any measure to prevent repeat infringements or alert users to the risks they take ».

Roblox has a high rating

As such, the association is seeking damages up to $ 200 million. The songs used by the game are performed by artists such as Ariana Grande, Imagine Dragons, Ed Sheeran and the Rolling Stones, among others. With more than 42 million daily active players, Roblox has built a strong player community and would use its influence to avoid paying music creators. The financial importance of the title also has a concrete figure on iOS since it brings in no less than $ 3 million per day thanks to its version on theApp Store d’Apple.

The complaint was filed on behalf of several production studios such as ABKCO Music & Records, Big Machine Records, Concord Music Group with Pulse Music Group, deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman), Downtown Music Publishing, Hipgnosis, Kobalt Music Group, MPL Music Publishing , Peermusic, Reservoir Media Management, Spirit Music Group and UMPG. To date, Roblox has not reacted publicly to the situation. The NMPA also aims Twitch for the same reasons and intends to make the two companies pay for these copyright issues.
