For decades past, television channeled an important part of the world’s audiences for the consumption of informative material. With the advent of cable television, the emergence of CNN set a precedent at the format level that, despite not losing force today, has felt the weight of the digitalization of the media in recent times.
The trend today revolves around streaming. Adapting to the new times, the North American chain announced a new project focused on streaming, which will operate in parallel with the television channels that they maintain today. The platform will be called CNN + and will debut early next year.
CNN + will arrive in 2022
The chain, owned by the Turner group, ad publicly this project this Monday. Although a name scope is presented with the brand you used CNN in Spain Between 1999 and 2010, this initiative will arrive only in the United States during the first quarter of next year, at least during this first stage.
This project will run in parallel with the operation of the rest of the chain’s channels. Without going too far, around 450 people have been hired to form teams at CNN +, adding from producers to engineers to marketers.
The contents that this service will offer will be made up of three elements: live programming, which includes 8 to 12 hours a day from a different schedule to that of television broadcasts; archival material and original productions; plus an “interactive community”, defined by CNN + executive in charge, Andrew Morse, as a space that will give subscribers the ability to «Interact directly with our talent and experts on the issues that matter most to them».
As it is a preliminary announcement, no further details are known about the future programmatic offering of this service, although it will clearly address the contingency under the characteristic editorial line of the medium. According to the chain in the statement announcing this project, this space will serve as a platform to give opportunities to a new generation of professionals.
Beyond patenting a necessary reinvention, in the face of new trends in content consumption, it is interesting to know the existence of this precedent and see how the industry will react to it. If CNN’s competition follows these steps, in the future we could have a varied offer of news platforms in audiovisual format, just as today we can choose from more than one service to watch series or movies.
