Qualcomm has published its numbers of WearOS chips sold and they show that only 40 million smartwatches went over the counter.
Only 40 million WearOS smartwatches sold
With the announcement of a new chip, which is expected to be released in 2021, Qualcomm has also announced its trend figures for the Wear chips. According to this, the company has sold just 40 million Snapdragon Wear chips since its launch in 2016. At first it doesn’t sound like that much. However, if you compare this with the sales figures from Apple, which probably already sold more smartwatches in the first half of 2021, you can clearly see again that WearOS was not really a success.
There are many reasons for the failure. For one thing, Qualcomm didn’t really bother with the hardware, but Google’s neglect of WearOS also played its part.
It remains to be seen whether this will change after the collaboration between Google and Samsung. Only today did Samsung be Unpacked Event officially confirmed for August 11, 2021. Among other things, the presentation of the new Galaxy Watch 4 models with the new Wear operating system is expected at this event.
