Epic Games bought Sketchfab, a 3D model distribution platform

Sketchfab, a platform dedicated to the detection, editing, buying and selling of 3D content, was bought by Epic Games. The acquired company is the owner of a catalog of 4 million 3D elements.

This acquisition, added to other recent purchases, strengthens its offer to develop a wide range of 3D projects, such as games and audiovisual productions. In short, together with Unreal Engine and MetaHuman, an increasingly powerful proposal is built.

Completing the Epic Games 3D ecosystem

The movement does not stop at Epic Games. The Sketchfab acquisition is in addition to recent acquisitions of Capturing Reality, 3D modeling platform based on scanning photos and ArtStation, a platform for 2D and 3D models.

As for Sketchfab, its technology offers means of integration with the main 3D creation tools and publishing platforms. Its tools are managed from the web and its interface is compatible with the main desktop and mobile browsers.

In the release accounting for this movement, Epic notes that “By joining forces, Epic and Sketchfab will be able to make 3D, AR and VR content more accessible and grow the ecosystem of creators, which are critical to an open and interconnected Metaverse”.

Sketchfab will continue to operate as an independent brand, as, despite being integrated into the Epic family of products, its use will continue to be extensible to third-party platforms, such as Unity and other engines, through existing integrations and others that will be added in the future. .

The value of this acquisition, in addition to the platform itself, is the extensive catalog it has, something that sits very well with a video game development platform. As an incentive for creators, Epic reduced the tax charged to authors from 30% to 12%, increasing their profit margin per sale.

In communicating this announcement, Alban Denoyel, CEO and Co-Founder of Sketchfab commented: “We created Sketchfab with the mission of fostering a new era of creativity and providing a service for creators to display their work online and make 3D content accessible”. About the purchase, he added that “Joining with Epic will allow us to accelerate the development of Sketchfab and our powerful suite of online tools, while providing an even greater experience for creators. We are proud to work together with Epic to build the Metaverse and allow creators to take their work even further ».
