The bet of the electric car is still far from being won, but it is the future of manufacturers that is emerging more and more clearly. In the first half of the year, Volkswagen tripled its deliveries of electric cars.
Between January and June, Volkswagen delivered 170,939 electric vehicles worldwide, i.e. 165.2% more than in the first half of 2020 (64,462 units). Admittedly, the first six months of last year were marked by the outbreak of the health crisis in Europe and elsewhere, synonymous with a partial paralysis of activity and demand.
An increasing demand
Nonetheless, this is a significant result, especially since the number of electric cars delivered doubled between the first and the second quarter of 2021: the German group thus went from 59,948 to 110,991 units. Motorists concerned about their environment, and supported by government aid measures, are more and more numerous to take the step towards the electric motorization.
Volkswagen is the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles in Europe with a market share of 26%. The most popular model is the ID.4 with over 37,000 units delivered in the first half of the year, followed by the ID.3 (31,000) and Audi’s e-tron (25,000).
More generally, in Europe, electric cars represented 7.5% of the new vehicle market in the second quarter, according to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA). At the same time last year, the segment only accounted for 3.5% of the new home market. In all, 210,000 electric cars were sold; the most demanding countries were Spain and Germany.
The European Commission has recommended that the sale of combustion vehicles be banned from 2035. Car manufacturers must therefore speed up the development and production of clean cars, which is what Volkswagen and the entire industrial sector are working on.
