Xiaomi overtakes Apple in the battle for the smartwatch market

According to a report, Xiaomi overtook Apple in the smartwatch market in the second quarter.

Xiaomi vor Apple, Fitbit & Co.

According to the report, the Chinese manufacturer shipped 8 million smartwatches in the second quarter, Apple “only” 7.9 million watches. This puts Xiaomi just ahead of the American company, namely before the presentation of the new Apple Watch Series 7.

Xiaomi overtook Apple and became the leading provider of wearables bands in the second quarter of 2021. Xiaomi’s performance was bolstered by the launch of the Mi Smart Band 6, although India, one of Xiaomi’s strongholds, was not on the initial global launch list.

“Xiaomi has taken a wise move to accelerate the release of the Mi Band 6, which is a more compelling device than its predecessor,” said Cynthia Chen, analyst at Canalys. “Xiaomi’s quick move to base watches has also helped the company increase its wristwatches by 1.3 million units this quarter.”

In second place is Huawei, followed by Fitbit and in last place Samsung.

If you separate the basebands – that is, low-end models like Xiaomi and Fitbit – from complete smartwatches, Apple is still in first place with a market share of 31.1%. Huawei comes in second place with just 9% and Xiaomi with a meager 5.7%.

Apple’s lead could be explained by the focus on health functions such as ECG monitoring.

“Suppliers are trying to make a big generation leap in smartwatch technologies. To stand out from the crowd, they improve the fundamentals like user experience and battery life, create their own user interfaces, and leverage their respective ecosystems to explore new and unique use cases, ”said Jason Low, research manager at Canalys. “But health tracking is the most popular use case for smartwatches. The ability to deliver cutting-edge health tracking capabilities and deliver meaningful data and actionable health insights to users will distinguish winners and losers. ”

“It is important that vendors invest in next generation health sensors and develop their own algorithms and solutions to not only track key biomarkers but also ensure high accuracy and reliability. Providers should focus on providing insights into health trends for users who use data collected over time so that they can understand how their lifestyle affects their wellbeing. ”
