Fujifilm has just announced a new medium format sensor body, the GFX 50S II. To go with it, there is also a new Fujifilm GF 35-70 f / 4.5-5.6 WR lens.
This is a device that should be of interest to bokeh lovers. By surprise, Fujifilm draws a new case, the GFX 50S II. There is a huge 51.4 MP medium format sensor capable of ridiculing even the best of full frames.
This is not the first time that Fujifilm has tried to impose its large 43.8 x 32.9 mm sensor (against 36 x 24 mm on full frame). We already found a medium format sensor on the Fujifilm GFX 50S first of the name, or on the impressive Fujifilm GFX 100S and its 102 MP.
The Fujifilm GFX 50S II is sort of a mix of these devices. It embeds the 51.4 MP medium format sensor from the GFX 50S, the X-Processor 4 processor from the GFX 100S, and even prides itself on offering sensor stabilization on five axes. Its case comes from the GFX 100S, allowing it to be particularly compact (15 x 10.42 x 4.4 cm) and light (900 grams) despite its huge sensor.
There’s a new joystick on the back, alongside a tilting touchscreen and an electric viewfinder with 3.69 million dots. Autofocus has been improved, and Fujifilm announces a function « Pixel Shift Multishoot » for capturing 200 MP snapshots as well as movie simulation « Nostalgic Neg ».
Despite the advantages of its sensor, the device unfortunately has to make some compromises. Its autofocus is limited to contrast detection – although the brand claims to have improved it – and the Fujifilm GFX 50S II will not be able to shoot in 4K, but only in Full HD at… 30 frames per second.
A bit limited in 2021, when many competing brands have already switched to 8K. It will therefore be mainly intended for photographers than for videographers, even if no full frame will be able to offer such intense bokeh. Finally, the Japanese firm takes the opportunity to announce a new GF mount lens, the Fujifilm GF 35-70 f / 4.5-5.6 WR, equivalent 28-55 mounted on a full frame.
