Álex Palou is very close to being IndyCar champion. The Spanish rider has increased his advantage in the general classification in the race that has been held in Laguna Seca, and in which he has achieved a brilliant second position. Next weekend is the decisive date in Long Beach and it looks great.
The victory has taken her Colton Herta, who already won the 2019 edition of this Monterrey Grand Prix. The American driver has dominated the race from the beginning, when he did have to battle Alexander Rossi and Will Power but got them out of the way due to different problems.
Palou is worth being tenth in Long Beach to be IndyCar champion
The Laguna Seca race was very clean, at least in terms of interruptions. The only yellow flag was caused by Rossi in the early stages of the race when he was fighting for the lead, and still the former Formula 1 driver managed to get back on track and has finished the race.
Palou made a cautious start keeping fourth positionBut when Rossi went off the track and Power had mechanical problems he climbed to second place where he finally finished. Although it was not as simple as it may seem, because the traffic played a decisive role throughout the race.
When Palou was closer to Herta, less than a second away, a bent train appeared that definitively truncated his chances of victory. Especially for the performance of Felix Rosenqvist, partner of Pato O’Ward, Palou’s greatest rival, at McLaren. The Swede let Herta pass but blocked the Spaniard.
There the victory options for a Palou disappeared, who also had to worry about second place in the last laps. A Romain Grosjean unleashed, and with a soft tire, came back brutally all the way to third place, but ultimately couldn’t catch Palou, in part because of a rather rough touch with Jimmie Johnson.
O’Ward has finally finished fifth and maintains his title options. He is 35 points behind Palou, while Josef Newgarden finished seventh and also has a mathematical chance of taking the crown, as he is 48 points behind Palou. The one that is discarded is Scott Dixon, who had an unfortunate accident with Takuma Sato and finished thirteenth.

We’ll see if next weekend, in the decisive race in Long Beach, a champion like Dixon does teamwork to help Palou. It would be worth the Spanish to finish in tenth position to be IndyCar championregardless of what your rivals do. Long Beach will pass judgment.
