After many cancellations by car manufacturers: Geneva Motor Show postponed to 2023

The Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) planned for the spring will not take place until a year later after several cancellations by car manufacturers. The organizer said on Thursday afternoon that due to the Corona situation, the traditional automobile fair would be postponed to spring 2023.

At the same time, the auto show is trying to develop the format of the show, it said. “We have already taken steps to move the platform forward and have an even more powerful show in 2023.”

However, the fair admitted that there had been several cancellations by car manufacturers recently. As a result of the pandemic, the current semiconductor shortage has become a priority for automakers. These problems must now be resolved first. This statement suggests that the cancellation of the fair is also in line with the wishes of many car manufacturers.

“Semiconductor shortages lead to new priorities”

The cancellation of GIMS 2022 is in the best interests of both the automaker and the automotive-interested public, explained exhibition boss Sandro Mesquita. The hurdles for exhibitors, visitors and journalists were too high.

“Many exhibitors have stated that the uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic made it impossible for them to make a firm commitment to participate in the trade fair in 2022,” said Mesquita. Then there is the chip crisis. “The chip crisis will probably continue to have an impact on the industry in the next year, with negative financial consequences for the automobile manufacturer Months. “

After weighing all the circumstances, postponing the Geneva fair is therefore the most appropriate decision. This also creates planning security for a Geneva motor show in 2023. You don’t want to have to cancel at the last minute, as was the case at the failed Geneva Motor Show this year.
