Scheuer wants more domestic components: the car industry should secure supply chains for e-mobility

On the way to more electromobility, Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) appeals to the automotive industry to bring as many components as possible into domestic production. It would be the wrong message to motorists to offer bonuses for the purchase of e-vehicles, “the end consumers then have to wait nine months for the product because various parts are not available,” said Scheuer on Wednesday in Hamburg. “When converting mobility, we need the availability of the products.”

In the automotive industry there are currently production stops and shift failures due to a lack of semiconductors. Important suppliers are located in Asia. Scheuer said: “I hope that the decisive factor is not only the global perspective of a manufacturer, but also what components absolutely have to remain in Germany in order to be able to use them in Germany Supply chains to keep”.

VDA welcomes funding projects

The President of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Hildegard Müller, pointed out that the shortage of semiconductors affects not only the German automotive industry, but all industries worldwide. “It will be crucial that we address the increasing demand for semiconductors with a powerful European semiconductor industry.” The VDA therefore welcomes the European funding projects and the current discussions in Germany on setting up semiconductor production in Europe and Germany.
