Stellantis will turn Turin into an epicenter for the electric car, which will house the new electrified platform for Maserati

As the end of combustion engines draws near more and more factories begin to reconvert to exclusively produce electric cars. The last to take the step has been the historic Fiat plant -now Stellantis- in Mirafiori, in Turin.

Stellantis has announced its intention to remodel this factory and transform it into a large production center for electric vehicles.

A new electrified platform specific to Maserati

Stellantis will assign Mirafiori a new electrified platform to manufacture the new Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio and the new Maserati Quattroporte in a period between 2022 and 2024.

It will thus convert this emblematic plant, where the Fiat 500 electric and the Maserati Levante, at group electrification center in Italy.

The company explained that thanks to this new ‘hub’, it will be possible to adopt a single production process for different Maserati models, capable of integrating different platforms, models and propulsion systems.

The objective, says Stellantis, is to improve the performance of the plants “to give this country a strategic role among the main European domestic markets of the group.”

The 1,100 workers at the Grugliasco factory will move to Mirafiori by 2024 without an impact on jobs, the consortium says. The truth is that Mirafiori is the largest Fiat Chrysler production center in the world.

Turin, a strategic area in which more than 2,000 million euros have been invested in the last three years, will have in terms of energy transition and as a center of competence for electrification with a “Battery Hub”, the Vehicle-to- plant. The Mirafiori plant is 82 years old; The first Fiat 500 was built here in 1957 and tens of thousands of people have worked there.

In 2019 a new assembly line was added to house the production of the electric Fiat 500, with an annual capacity of 80,000 units.
