It is the rear-wheel drive version with a single 333 hp engine, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+. A version that in Europe, under the WLTP cycle, approves a whopping 726 km. It is a difference of more than 160 km with respect to the European homologation, there is nothing.

Again, EPA exposes the European WLTP cycle, more permissive and remote from reality than the American cycle. In other words, before we have been able to thoroughly test the new Mercedes, the EPA homologation gives us a more faithful idea of ​​what the actual average range of the EQS will be.

Regarding the Mercedes EQS 580 4Matic+ of 524 CV and integral traction has been homologated with an average autonomy of up to 340 miles, that is to say, 547 km. In Europe, it approves a range of 657 km. The difference between both homologations, again, is remarkable and rises here to 110 km.

The WLTP cycle is a tool to compare, not to measure autonomy

Despite how optimistic the WLTP cycle homologation is usually, it does not mean that it is not a valid indication of the autonomy of the cars that go through that cycle. It must be taken as a maximum value with all favorable conditions.

And above all, we must remember that its function is to be able to compare several models under the same standard, to know which one has more autonomy compared to others, not to know whether or not it can reach 726 km, in the case of the EQS.

In that test, Alexander Bloch, head of tests for the German publication, covered the 638 km of the journey between Munich and Berlin on a single charge, with 48 km of autonomy remaining, according to the on-board computer. It does not reach 700 km of autonomy, but it is close.

The Mercedes EQS enters, even under the EPA prism, into the select group of cElectric cars with a range of more than 500 km. A group led by the Lucid Air Dream Edition, which holds the EPA range record at 520 miles, or 837 kilometers, followed by the Tesla Model S Long Range at 405 miles (652 km) or the Tesla Model 3 Long Range at 353 miles (568 km). ).
