Acer introduces new Chromebooks for study and work

After presenting its new ConceptD machines, Acer shifts directly to four new models of Chromebooks.

Acer today introduced a new series of Chromebooks, designed for students and mobile professionals. With more or less powerful devices, ranging from € 399 to € 1,049, there should be something for all budgets and all profiles.

The first of these is the Spin 514, a sleek convertible with a 14-inch FHD IPS display. It is primarily intended for professionals, especially those who regularly need to join videoconferences on the go. To meet this need, the device has a MIPI FHD webcam equipped with de-noise technology; enough to appear in its best light, even in an airport or a cafe with questionable lighting.

The device will ship with an Intel Core i7 processor, going up to the 11th and latest generation for the Enterprise edition. They should stay particularly silent as Acer has chosen to dispense with the fan entirely. The device will therefore be cooled entirely passively, which should be very comfortable … provided that the thermal performance is there!

No particular surprise when it comes to the convertible design. It is always a very practical addition on this type of device, which allows you to choose the most suitable configuration for each task: computer, tablet, or even extra screen. However, the connection seems very light, and the documentation only mentions two USB Type-C ports and Wi-Fi 6. There is, however, a Gorilla Glass touchpad, and a backlit keyboard, two points that are always appreciable. The Chromebook Spin 514 will be available during the month of October, starting at € 799, and € 1,049 for the Enterprise version.

Chromebook 514: mini price, maxi autonomy

But if the convertible aspect is of no use to you, you can also opt for the more sober Chromebook 514. It is an ultra portable equipped with the Kompanio 828 from MediaTek. Not enough to do miracles in terms of raw performance; however, it is a very energy efficient chip. We can therefore expect this Chromebook 514 to be very economical and have a comfortable autonomy (15h according to Acer). In addition, it benefits from the fast recharge which allows to recover up to 50% of the battery in just 30 minutes.

The rest of the device is quite similar; we find the 14-inch IPS panel, the Gorilla Glass trackpad and the same connections as on the Spin 514. The Chromebook 514 will be available during the month of October, at a fairly reasonable price of € 399.

Chromebook Spin 314: The Perfect Student Companion

If the convertible side appeals to you and all you need is a modest little utility, Acer also offers the Chromebook Spin 314. This is another small-sized PC-tablet hybrid, again with an IPS panel. 14 inch.

The main difference is in the expected use. If we rely on previous models of Chromebook 314, we can expect a device rather designed for students, and it should be perfect for taking notes or putting together a presentation.

On the other hand, we do not yet know the exact processor model, but we should not expect to be able to play demanding games. To geek out in an amphitheater, you will have to iron.

We also note that the connection is more developed than on the above devices; in addition to the two USB Type-C sockets, the HDMI port and the microSD slot, there are two USB Type-A ports; always handy for connecting a mouse or an external hard drive. The Chromebook Spin 514 will be available during the month of October, starting at € 499.

Chromebook 515: one book supercharged with Iris Xe

Acer has also thought of those who need a more muscular device with the Chromebook 515. On this model, we find an IPS panel but it is gaining ground; here it reaches 15.6 inches, and is available with the optional touch function.

They too will ship the 11th generation of Intel Core i7 processors, but they will especially be entitled to an Intel Iris X graphics controllere. Enough to allow yourself a few additional operations compared to the Spin 514 above. This duo will be completed by 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB NVMe SSD.

The connection, it is slightly more complete than that of the 514; we find the two USB-C ports and Wi-Fi 6, but with a microSD slot and an HDMI interface as a bonus. This Chromebook Spin 514 will be available during the month of October, starting at € 499 for the standard version and € 799 for the Enterprise version.
