The smallest device in the range offers a deserved update, with increased performance for a few euros more.

The Raspberry Pi has gradually established itself as one of the best microcomputers on the market. This adorable little beast is now available in different versions, such as the very economical Raspberry Pi Zero. This one sees moreover see his family tree lengthen with the arrival of the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.

For those who are not familiar with the brand, the term Zero refers to the less powerful, but also the smallest and economical range of Raspberry. When it was released in 2015, the original Zero was sold at a ridiculous price, around € 5 each. Its successor, the Raspberry Pi W, cost between 8 and 10 €. While this new version is a little more expensive, and it is marketed around € 14.

On the other hand, the price is not the only one to have swelled; to our great pleasure we see the same trend in terms of performance. This device is entitled to the new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards, but above all to the same SoC as the Raspberry Pi 3. This Broadcom BCM2710A includes a 4-core ARM Cortex-A53 chip clocked at 1 GHz, all with 512 MB of RAM. .

The Pi Zero isn’t big, but it’s stalwart

Admittedly, this chip is already almost seven years old. But the Zero is traditionally the least efficient device in the range; until then, it had to be satisfied with a very, very limited power, even on the scale of these small devices. The SoC of the old flagship should therefore radically change the game. On paper, we expect vastly superior performance. In multithreading, they could even be five times higher than those of the Zero W according to the foundation.

And despite this update, do not count on the Raspberry Foundation to make concessions on size; these beautiful novelties fit on the same PCB as its predecessors. This Zero 2 W therefore retains the usual small 65 mm * 31 mm format. The same goes for food; this Zero 2W still requires a small generic 2W power supply. The rest of the connections, including the GPIO pins, also remain the same. No need to review your entire installation!

With its price a tad higher and its increased performance, this already excellent price-performance ratio becomes almost unbeatable. It is therefore a superb candidate for all your fun, educational or even home automation projects … at least, for those who will manage to get their hands on it before the shortage resumes its own, a small stock is currently available on various sites such as Kubii.
