Because of Corona rules: VW works meeting is shrinking – only 7,000 are allowed into the hall

It should be the first works meeting in Wolfsburg for almost two years. But now Corona is throwing the plan through the bill again: Due to the current protection rules, not all 60,000 employees at the site are allowed into the hall on Thursday. The meeting should take place anyway – but only as operational information for 7000 participants. Everyone else can watch online. The works council announced this on Tuesday on the Group’s intranet.

“I’m looking forward to the information about the workforce, but of course I hope that we can get together again soon without any restrictions,” said works council chairman Daniela Cavallo in the entry Automobile week is present. “Unfortunately, this is not possible at the moment. This event is therefore the best possible option to inform the workforce about the current situation.”

This saves employees’ questions

In addition to herself, the planned speakers are CEO Herbert Diess, who had canceled his trip to the USA under pressure from Cavallos, as well as Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) and IG Metall boss Jörg Hofmann, both of whom are members of the VW supervisory board. The eagerly awaited debate at the end, during which Diess was supposed to answer questions from the employees, was canceled. Because this is not an official works meeting, this debate will not take place.

A total of 7,000 employees should be able to be present in Hall 11 of the plant, with a few thousand more directly in front of the hall. The 2G rules apply: only vaccinated and convalescent people are allowed to participate. For everyone else, the meeting will be broadcast on the intranet.

3G implementation is not feasible

The works council had actually planned to hold the meeting under 3G rules, i.e. also to let in the tested. In the discussions between the works council, the company and the city, however, it became clear that “an implementation based on a 3G concept at a location of this size is simply not feasible”. The only choice was therefore: “2G or no staff information in presence.”
