The new Volkswagen ID.5 is the flagship SUV Coupé of Volkswagen electric cars, with 520 km of autonomy

Volkswagen continues to expand its range of electric cars with the arrival of the Volkswagen ID.5, the 5-door coupe version of the Volkswagen ID.4. The brand’s new SUV thus completes a range made up of the compact ID.3, the ID.4 and its familiar version, Volkswagen ID.6, this last model being reserved for the Chinese market.

It is SUV with coupe profile, the second of the brand after the recently presented Taigo, which will be manufactured in Navarra. The ID.5, logically, is positioned in the market above the ID.4, it is an alternative for those who want a model in which the design has priority, as indicated, in addition, the possibility of opting for 21-inch wheels . It will arrive in dealerships towards the end of March 2022.

The Volkswagen ID.5 has a dimensions almost identical to those of the ID.4. It measures 4.60 meters long, has a width of 1.85 meters, a height of 1.61 meters and a wheelbase of 2.77 meters. Thus, the ID.5 is only 2 cm longer and 1 cm higher.

Apart from the bumper, whose air intake houses a mobile wing, all the elements on the front of the ID.5 are identical to those of the ID.4. The fastback profile lowers the roof in a gentle curve from the center pillars to the rear.

The roof arches narrow as the car approaches behind, and the rear has a fixed spoiler. With its more aerodynamic profile, the ID.5 exhibits a coefficient of resistance of 0.26, while in ID.4 it is 0.28). Which should be reflected in an improvement in consumption.

Despite the sloping roof profile of the ID.5, only 12mm of headroom in the rear seats has been lost compared to the ID.4. Legroom remains superb thanks to the long wheelbase and flat ground. The trunk, meanwhile, has seen its cargo volume grow slightly to reach 549 liters (6 liters more than the ID.4).

The Volkswagen ID.5, remains faithful to Volkswagen’s decision not to offer a trunk in the front, unlike other electric SUVs, such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E which has a 100-liter front boot.

In the ID.5, under the front hood, are the radiators and part of the air conditioning system. To highlight, among its options, an electrically retractable tow ball. At the moment its towing capacity is not known, but the ID.4, which is still the same model as the ID.5, can with a trailer up to 1,900 kg.

On board the ID.5, nothing changes from the ID.4. We meet the same minimalist design dashboard, with the instrument cluster attached to the steering column and the 12-inch touchscreen of the infotainment system that houses almost all the controls. However, the ID.5 has the option of a head-up display with augmented reality, whose information is projected as if it were 10 meters away.

A single available battery that offers up to 520 km of autonomy

The ID.5 is in the Volkswagen range above the ID.4 and will only be available with the ID.4’s largest battery, with a usable capacity of 77 kWh. The version of access to range will have an engine, located in the rear je, of 128 kW (174 CV) and 310 Nm of maximum torque. This version will be the ID.5 Pro and covers 0-100 km / h in 10.4 s.

Next in the range is the ID.5 Pro Performance with 204 hp and 310 Nm and improves in 0-100 km / h with a time of 8.4 s. Both the ID.5 Pro and Pro Performance are limited to 160 km / h. Volkswagen announces a WLTP range of up to 520 km, in line with what the ID.4 offers.

The range is completed by the ID.5 GTX, whose additional engine mounted on the front axle increases the total power to 299 hp and offers all-wheel drive, as in the ID.4 GTX. The ID.5 GTX can travel 490 km on a single charge, depending on the brand.

Volkswagen is now betting on equipment packages rather than equipment levels for its new models. Thus, the new ID.5 has four packages: Design, Infotainment, Comfort, Assistance and Sport.

It should be noted that the equipment of these packages can be expanded or reduced even once the car has been purchased. The car can receive remote updates (one is expected every 12 weeks), and at the same time activate or desactivate certain options if the client wishes.

One of the optional systems that could be activated or deactivated later in the car’s life is the optional Park Assist Plus semi-autonomous parking system. It can memorize the driver’s maneuver at the push of a button and repeat it later on its own.

Finally, it should be noted that the ID.5 equips communication technologies between vehicles (with other Volkswagen cars, to be exact), as well as communication between vehicles and infrastructures, with a range of 800 m.

Details of equipment and specific prices for Spain will be announced later. The Volkswagen ID.5 has its commercialization planned for the end of March 2022.
