Ambiguous statement: Tesla may be planning a second factory in China

Rumors are currently circulating on the Internet that the US electric car manufacturer Tesla is planning a second factory in China. Allegedly, the company has already selected a location for the additional branch: It should be in Qingdao, a port city in the east of the country. Tesla already operates a factory in Shanghai, which is also located on the east coast, but more than 700 kilometers further south.

A spokeswoman for Tesla in China has now contradicted the rumors. However, her denial sounds as if it is primarily directed against the alleged decision in favor of Qingdao – and not fundamentally against the information that Tesla wants to build a second Chinese factory. Currently they received a lot of media inquiries regarding “the second factory”, according to their statement: “The information about the location of Tesla’s second factory on the Internet is not true.”

Musk also spoke of the fourth car factory

A few weeks ago, Tesla boss Elon Musk had said about rumors about an allegedly planned factory in Russia: “Tesla has not yet decided on a location for a fourth gigafactory.” That also sounded as if another car factory was being planned. So there seems to be something in the works. In the meantime, the manufacturer would like to produce the first cars in its German plant in Grünheide near Berlin. The schedule is uncertain, however, because the final approval from the state is still pending and the new online discussion has to be evaluated first. (mer)
