Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is implementing a new strategy to help creators evade Apple’s subscription fee.
Yes, they will be able to avoid going through the 30% cut that Apple applies, if they implement the new methodology suggested by Facebook.
Creators will be able to charge subscriptions using Facebook Pay
Mark Zuckerberg shared a post to announce changes that will benefit creators:
We launched a promotional link for the creators of your Subscription offer. When people subscribe via this link, creators will keep all the money they earn (minus taxes).
So if they use this promotional link that Zuckerberg mentions, the creators will avoid the 30% commission on subscriptions. What subscriptions are you referring to? It is one of the options that Facebook offers so that creators can monetize their content.
That is, creators can offer their followers exclusive content, discounts and a series of rewards in exchange for paying a subscription. A methodology that we have already seen on many platforms. And while Facebook promised not to charge commissions (until 2023) for each subscription that the creator achieves, they still have to take into account the dynamics of Apple.
Remember that Apple charges a commission every time a subscription is generated within the application from the mobile. So if a follower buys one subscription from the Facebook app from their iPhone, the creator automatically loses the part of the money that corresponds to the commission.
To avoid this, Facebook suggests directing followers to a website to subscribe using Facebook Pay. This system would give the creators the entire payment of the subscription.
Along with this new modality, Facebook announced a new bonus program for creators:
We launched a bonus program that pays creators for every new subscriber they earn as part of our $ 1 billion creator investment announced this summer.
As the Facebook team describes, they will be paid $ 5 to $ 20 for each new subscriber, and even the chance to win a bonus of up to $ 10,000. A dynamic that is available from now until the end of 2021.
