The new Toyota Aygo Cross is an urban SUV that will arrive in Spain in 2022 only with a gasoline engine

Toyota has just launched the new Aygo X, whose ‘X’ is pronounced ‘Cross’. This small crossover of the segment A and groundbreaking features derives directly from the prototype Aygo X prologue, and is developed on the plataforma GA-B of the Japanese brand, which is part of the new TNGA modular architecture.

The little brother of the Yaris Cross has been designed in europe and it is specially designed to move like a fish in water through European cities: it has a high height, some contained heights (but looser than those of the Aygo) and a tight turning radius. It will hit the market next spring with a three-cylinder gasoline engine.

An exterior design that does not go unnoticed

Since its birth in 2005, the name Aygo has been linked to a concept of urban youth car. Now, designers from Toyota’s European Design Center (ED²) in Nice (France) and the brand’s style department in Belgium have wanted to give the new Aygo Cross a “more adventurous” and contemporary touch.

Although they have maintained their essence, the result is an urbanite with the air of an SUV the most striking for its segment.

The bi-tone bodywork The new Aygo Cross emphasizes its shapes and highlights the car’s graphic profile, which seems marked with an “X”, especially when viewed from behind. On the front, in addition to the large grille flanked by the fog lights, they draw attention LED light clusters and the shape of the turn signals, which together frame the upper part of the hood.

In the side view highlights the new wedge-shaped roof silhouette, which seeks to bring a sporty touch to the model along with other distinctive elements such as the short overhangs, the large wheel arches highlighted by black moldings or the rims, up to 18 inches.

With a length of 3.7 meters the new Aygo Cross is 235mm longer than its predecessor, and its wheelbase has been increased by 90mm. The overall width of the body is now 1,74 m (125 mm higher) and the height has been increased to 1.51 m (50 mm more than in the Aygo) for greater comfort in the cabin.

The trunk volume up to 231 liters (60 more than its predecessor) thanks to an ingenious design of the space behind the rear seats. In terms of maneuverability, the Aygo Cross has a turning radius of just 4.7 meters.

An interior designed for day to day

The interior of the Toyota Aygo Cross promises something more than clearance for occupants than in the outgoing Aygo, as a result of the greater width that the specific configuration of the GA-B platform gives the vehicle for this model.

Thus, the front seats are 20 mm further apart and 45 mm have been gained for the shoulders. In addition, the driver’s position is elevated and the angle of the A-pillar reaches up to 24 degree tilt to facilitate greater visibility behind the wheel.

As for the interior design, without fanfare, it is articulated around a central display high-definition oval shaped that is tactile and has a size of 9 inches. The new access model to the Toyota X family incorporates practical details such as the possibility of wireless charging for Smarphones or ambient light.

Through the most recent multimedia system of the Japanese brand and the MyT application, the most relevant information about the vehicle can be consulted. It will also allow for cloud browsing and, upon launch, the Aygo Cross will support over-the-counter (OTA) updates on a regular basis. Toyota Smart Connect will also offer connectivity in this model through Android Auto y Apple CarPlay.

The Aygo Cross has as standard with the Toyota Safety Sense, which incorporates a combination of a monocular camera sensor with millimeter wave radar so that safety systems such as pre-collision can detect other vehicles at higher speeds.

Its features include day and night pedestrian detection, cyclist detection (daytime), emergency braking, intelligent adaptive cruise control, trajectory maintenance system, or emergency power steering. .

In the passive safety section, it includes, for example, structural reinforcements for shock absorption that guarantee comprehensive safety.

With thermal and three-cylinder core

The heart that moves the new Toyota Aygo Cross is the well-known 1KR-FE engine from 998 cc capacity and 72 hp power, which has been improved to comply with European regulations.

This gasoline engine – the only one that the car will have at its launch – offers a maximum torque of 205 Nm at 6,600 rpm and promises a consumption of 4.7 l / 100 km and emissions of 107 g / km of CO₂. As standard, it will be associated with a manual transmission, although the brand has announced that, as an option, the S-CVT gearbox.

The new Toyota Aygo ‘X’ is scheduled to reach European dealers as of March 2022, and at the moment the brand has not revealed the starting price for the Spanish market. As a reference, the current Aygo has a base price of around 12,000 euros and, without a doubt, the Cross will exceed them.

In its first six months of life, the new Aygo Cross will have a limited version that in addition to being dressed with a body in “Jungle Green” and black, it will incorporate contrasting elements in “Tangerine” orange and a matte finish (as can be seen in the main photo of the article). It will also have 18-inch matt black alloy wheels and an interior to match the exterior colors.

In addition, the Aygo Cross ‘Limited’ will be loaded with extra equipment, so it is expected that this initial version will have a higher price compared to the access versions that will arrive later.

What the brand has confirmed is that online reservations will be opened soon of the new model. More information will come with them, so we will stay tuned.
