In 2022, a new system to validate transport in Ile-de-France with an Android smartphone

Bad news for transport users in Ile-de-France who have become accustomed to validating a trip with their smartphone: Orange and Sosh SIM cards are no longer compatible with this system. A new solution will be implemented next year.

Since the start of the 2019 school year, users of Android smartphones equipped with an Orange or Sosh SIM chip can validate their transport with their phones at the terminals of buses, metro, RER, trams and trams in the Paris region. For them, the drudgery of the Navigo pass is over, everything goes through the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy smartphones still operational

Unfortunately, this option is no longer in effect. Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), in charge of public transport in the region, and Orange ended their partnership at the end of last year as explained The Parisian. And since then, the SIM cards issued by the operator are no longer compatible with this validation system, which requires a special component present on the old SIM cards. It seems that the number of users of this “validator” function is low, a few thousand at most, which may have precipitated its end.

Île-de-France Mobilités explains that “ as long as you do not change your SIM card, the service is operational: you can continue to buy tickets and validate them with your phone », And this is confirmed by Orange. But in the event of a change of SIM card (within the framework of the opening of a new line for example), it is finished, it is necessary to return from there to Navigo.

The only exception: owners of Samsung Galaxy smartphones can always take advantage of it, regardless of the operator. Despite everything, this only represents a small proportion of public transport users. A new solution is however in development on the side of IDFM: it will be available in mid-2022 for all Android smartphones, regardless of the operator. This still excludes iPhone users, many of whom are chomping at the bit.
