Samsung’s very exclusive deal with Google

As is well known, Samsung and Google have worked together for the new Wear OS 3, but the deal seems to have been even more exclusive than assumed.

Wear OS 3 – Samsung ensures little competition

After the release of Wear OS, rumors quickly spread that Google had made an exclusive deal with Samsung, because the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 series is still the only one with the new operating system to this day. Other manufacturers are not completely outside, but they still have to be patient.

Insider circles have now revealed more about this exclusivity. Other (long-term) partners such as mobvoi or Fossil are said to have only found out about the big update when Wear OS 3 was officially announced at Google I / O 2021. While it is usually the case that the manufacturers are involved in such processes so that compatibility can be tested, Google has completely surrendered itself to Samsung here.

To be honest, I don’t know if Google really did itself a favor. Sure, Samsung is a big player in the field of smartwatches and can definitely compete with Apple, but ultimately the users who have been (long) loyal supporters of Google Wear OS fall by the wayside. Whether and when your smartwatch will receive the upgrade to Wear OS 3 is still not certain and the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 also has a decisive disadvantage: the Blood pressure and ECG function can only be used in connection with a Samsung smartphone, so that everyone with another Android smartphone has significant restrictions in the functions.

What was once a strength of the Wear OS platform has become its biggest sticking point. This means that all Wear OS-powered smartwatches ran with the same operating system, with the same functions and, above all, the same appearance. No manufacturer was able to sensibly adapt the operating system, although Google allowed slight changes to the color scheme after a few years.

With the new Wear OS 3, Google would have had the chance to change this. It’s a shame it didn’t take advantage of this.
