one of the rare copies of Jodorowsky’s book at auction

The book, which brings together scripts and visual concepts of Jodorowsky’s abortive adaptation, is estimated between 25,000 and 35,000 euros.

It’s not just Denis Villeneuve who was inspired by Frank Herbert’s universe. While the film is still showing in many French cinemas, and has just exceeded 330 million international box office receipts, a adaptation of Dune talk about her. It is not that of David Lynch, but of another which ultimately never saw the light of day.

In the early 1970s, after the success ofThe mole and The Sacred Mountain, Alejandro Jodorowsky discovers a science fiction novel recommended to him by a friend. This novel, you will understand, is Dune by Frank Herbert. Passionate about the adventures of Paul Atréides, the Chilean filmmaker decides to embark on an adaptation for the big screen. After two years of writing, and the recruitment of a 5-star cast – Dali, Orson Welles, Mick Jagger to name a few – the director faces the refusal of Hollywood studios to produce this 12-hour film. The project will never see the light of day, leaving fans a missed opportunity to explore the universe of Dune in great detail.

It was also the subject of a documentary, presented at Cannes in 2013 and directed by Frank Pavich. It was on this occasion that the spectators discovered the existence of a book written by the director and which brings together scripts, storyboards as well as concept art. The goal was obviously not to sell, but rather to present his vision to his teams.

A very rare edition at auction

Unavailable for sale, this work could quickly reach the hands of an enthusiast. Indeed, one of the 20 copies in circulation is auctioned by the company Christie’s. It is currently estimated at between 25,000 and 35,000 euros and will be sold to the highest bidder at the end of next month. This starting sum should quickly reach new heights, since it is the object of the fantasies of many science fiction enthusiasts.

The lucky buyer will undoubtedly have something to entertain himself before the release of the second opus in the Villeneuve saga. Dune: part 2 was announced a few weeks ago by Warner Bros. This second part will be broadcast from October 18, 2023 in the rooms of the Hexagon. Moreover, it could be that a third film is on the program. At least that’s what Denis Villeneuve hopes. For this to materialize, however, the second opus will have to meet the same success as the first. It must be said that given the colossal budget necessary for the production of such a cinematographic adventure, Warner Bros. undoubtedly wants to make sure to recover its costs.
