Practically unsolvable logistical task: charging infrastructure slows down car sharing with e-cars

The expansion of the car sharing offer with electric cars is currently being carried out by the Charging infrastructure resided in Germany.

E-car shares vary widely

According to a dpa survey, the proportion of e-cars in German sharing fleets varies greatly depending on the provider. Around ten percent of the cars at the Flinkster subsidiary have an alternative drive – most of them with electric drive, as a rail spokesman announced. Ford Carsharing has the lowest proportion of the companies surveyed with 0.3 percent vehicles with electric or hybrid drives. The front runner is the still young provider Weshare. All 2300 vehicles are fully electric, a spokesman said. The offer is still only available in the metropolises of Berlin and Hamburg. Miles company left the number of e-cars in its fleet open upon request.

Expectations are high

“From our point of view, sharing vehicles must above all be small, they must be economical and they should be electric,” said Jens Hilgenberg from the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND). “What we don’t need are any large SUVs and what we also don’t need is the combustion engine for the foreseeable future,” says the mobility expert of the German press agency.

“Electrification is trendy,” said industry expert Stefan Bratzel with conviction. The car rental company Hertz recently caused a stir. In America, the company plans to add 100,000 Tesla electric cars to its fleet. “When such a big player relies on electrification, it basically gives the topic a boost,” said Bratzel.

In major German cities, the expectations of providers are high. The Hanseatic City of Hamburg, for example, would like the carsharing fleets to be fully electrified, according to a spokesman. According to the Berlin Senate, a climate-friendly rental business is only possible “with a complete set of electric cars”. The city of Munich sees e-car sharing as “a contribution to the turnaround in traffic”.

E-cars “not more lucrative”

According to industry expert Bratzel, however, the road to a fully electric fleet is rocky. “The switch to e-cars is not more lucrative,” he says. They are cheaper per kilometer compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, but electric vehicles are more expensive to buy and are currently in short supply due to the lack of chips. To do this, the loading has to be organized somehow. “Just before the end of the rental period, plug the car into the socket again, something very few customers can imagine. One possibility would be to create their own charging stations,” says Bratzel.

It would also be conceivable to reserve a charging space exclusively for car sharing vehicles at public charging stations with two parking spaces. This is not only demanded by the environmental protection organization BUND, but also by the German Association of Cities. “The cities alone cannot set up the e-car charging network,” said the general manager of the German Association of Cities, Helmut Dedy. In the medium term, the providers should manage the operation and maintenance of the charging stations independently without public subsidies.

The Federal Association of Carsharing responded cautiously to the question of financial support for the charging stations. In fact, charging is a big challenge, according to a spokesman. “The vehicles are only allowed to stand at normal charging stations in public spaces while the charging process is in progress.” This is a “practically unsolvable logistical task” for providers and customers.
