Nest Hub gets sleep phases and snore detection through update!

Already in March we have reported about itthat Google wants to introduce the Soli-Radar in addition to sleep tracking in its second-generation Nest Hub and now an update is bringing the sleep phases and snoring detection to the device.

Google Nest Hub – with an update for better sleep quality

Google promotes “improved algorithms”, the detection of sleep phases, a conventional metric that you already know from smartwatches and fitness trackers. This information in hours and percentages – grouped according to Awake, REM, Light and Deep – appears on the “Duration” screen next to the total time asleep and asleep time. The Quality screen has also been updated with a sleep staging hypnogram chart.

The Duration and Quality screens show you how long you were in each sleep phase. By combining your sleep information with disruption events, you can better understand what is happening while you are asleep.

Improved noise detection also ensures that the Nest Hub only picks up coughs and snores from the calibrated sleeping area and not from the entire room, thus ignoring other audible disturbances.

Any coughing and snoring that occurs outside of your area will be displayed on the new Other Sounds timeline. This new timeline also shows other loud noises.

The update also brings the third-party “Calm” function to the Google Nest Hub. This offers a library with different sleep stories, music and mediations:

To try out meditation content from Calm, you can either say “Hey Google, show me meditations from Calm” or “Hey Google, start a meditation”. If you have Calm Premium, you already have access to the full library. If you don’t, you can access multiple free tracks or sign up for an account that gives you access to Calm Premium.

The update is now available in the USA and will be rolled out worldwide in the next few weeks.

According to Google, the sleep sensor should still be available free of charge by the end of 2022. From 2023 it will then become part of Fitbit Premium Fit and then you have to take out a paid subscription for currently € 8.99 / month or € 79.99 / year.
