completed the first flight with Repsol biofuel

A new step has been taken on the road to dscoffing at air travel by Repsol and Vueling, since an alliance between both companies has served to achieve the first flight with sustainable fuel of the IAG company.

The journey has been made on the occasion of the Tourism Innovation Summit in Seville and has covered the distance between Barcelona and Seville, traveling 820 km.

Up to 2.5 tons tons less carbon dioxide

According to the companies, this flight has achieved reduce air emissions by 2.5 tons of CO₂ thanks to the improvement in energy efficiency and the use of biofuel.

Regarding the improvement in efficiency, Vueling has worked to reduce weight thanks to replacing the seats in its fleet with lighter ones or the implementation of new ailerons whose function is to increase the lift of the plane at low speeds.

The Repsol biofuel comes from the transformation of biomass, a pot of organic, vegetable or animal origin, through mechanical, thermochemical and biological processes.

In fact, this is not the first IAG agreement to obtain sustainable fuel for its fleet, as it has also signed an agreement with Velocys, a sustainable fuels technology company, to acquire 220,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel for 10 years.

The IAG objective in terms of sustainability, it is to operate 10% of its flights with sustainable aviation fuel in 2030 and achieve net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

As for Repsol, it is already working to develop renewable hydrogen from biomethane manufactured with urban solid waste, which will be used for manufacture low carbon footprint fuels, such as gasoline, diesel and aviation kerosene.

And, in 2020, Repsol began construction of its first advanced biofuel plant in Spain, which will start up in 2023. It will be located in Cartagena and will have a capacity of 250,000 tons of biofuels per year, valid for cars, trucks and planes.

This movement represents a new step to decarbonize aviation, which is a challenge in the fight to combat climate change since it is one of the most CO₂ emitters and that their journeys require a lot of fuel.

Therefore, both the development of biofuels for aviation and the electrification of this transport model will be key to achieving net emissions of carbon dioxide in 2050.
