Survey: 40 percent of e-car drivers are dissatisfied with fast charging on long journeys

Almost 40 percent of the electric car drivers surveyed by ADAC are not particularly satisfied with charging over long distances: In addition to expanding the charging network, their wish list includes “a simplification of processes, more reliable charging stations, lower prices and faster charging,” as ADAC said on Wednesday announced in Munich.

Only 23 percent of the 400 e-car drivers surveyed expressed concern that they would not be able to reach the next fast charging station in time. But 32 percent said that charging attempts fail sometimes or more often. They cited defective, non-operational or undetectable charging columns as the main reason. This was followed by problems with activation and unaccepted charging cards or apps.

In particular, a large number of respondents were annoyed about e-car drivers who do not clear the column quickly after charging: 73 percent said they would support a blocking fee for e-cars that occupy a charging point after they have been charged.

Tesla superchargers do better

A good two thirds agreed with the statement that paying with current giro, debit or credit cards via a card reader would make the process easier. According to the ordinance, at least new public charging stations must be equipped with readers for debit and credit cards from mid-2023.

In addition, only 38 percent of those surveyed consider the information about the costs to be sufficient. “Electric car drivers often cannot tell from charging stations which prices are actually being billed, and in some cases the prices for ad-hoc charging are twice as high as those for contract customers,” criticized ADAC technology president Karsten Schulze. In view of the price differences and the lack of clarity of the tariffs, the costs for a charging process can hardly be calculated.

The ADAC interviewed 400 drivers of all-electric cars online who had covered a distance of 100 kilometers or more (one way) at least once in the past twelve months, using a public fast-charging station. The store in town was not part of the survey. As a comparison group, 100 Tesla drivers were also asked about their experiences with the Tesla superchargers.
