The wait is over: the new Kia Niro it’s here. The South Korean brand reveals what is the second generation of your compact SUV, which follows the same philosophy as the overhang, but with a completely renewed design.

Thus, the menu will continue to have three variants in eco code, that is, it will have one 100% electric version, one hybrid and one plug-in hybrid.

its arrival on the market is set for 2022 and, as confirmed by Kia Spain, here it will be launched in the second half, between July and September. The new Kia Niro has been presented at the Seoul Mobility Show 2021.

New design, digital interior and eco-friendly materials

Sculpted under the new design language ‘Opposites United’, also present for example in el concept Kia EV9, this new Kia Niro completely changes its aesthetics.

The front drinks from the lines of the concept Kia HabaNiro, with a slim, minimal grille and vee-shaped daytime optics, in combination with a generous front air intake. This configuration is also quite close al Hyundai Bayon.

So does the rear, in which some vertical boomerang headlights housed on the rear pillar. Kia boasts that this rear with a more than short overhang improves air flow and therefore aerodynamics.

Although it also contributes, it is understood to achieve the maximum interior space delaying the position of the rear wheels as much as possible. Kia for now does not reveal dimensions, or length of battle or the capacity of the trunk.

The set is completed with gloss black moldings for the wheel arches, the lower part of the side or the entire lateral vertical of the rear and roof bars also in this tonality.

For its part in the interior dominates a panoramic screen that combines instrumentation and multimedia display united in the same frame, being similar to that of the Kia EV6, its new generation electric, although with a sloping upper profile.

Another novelty is that the gear stick is embodied in an electronic dial, while under the central console the physical controls are limited to the climate control temperature wheels, the rest being haptic-type buttons.

That also highlights that this new Niro resort to sustainable materials. For example, the ceiling has been designed based on recycled wallpaper, while the seat upholstery is made of Bio PU (bio-based polyurethane) with Tencel fibers derived from eucalyptus leaves. Also, the paint on the door panels is water-based and contains no benzene, toluene or xylene isomers.

For now, the only technical details that the brand advances for this new installment of the Kia Niro is that its plug-in hybrid version will have the advanced Greenzone driving mode.

This technology uses geopositioning and to browsing history to identify and memorize green areas (residential, pedestrian priority, schools, hospitals …) automatically and exclusively activating the electric motor in them.

Kia anticipates that the new Kia Niro will be offered in the same options as its predecessor: a hybrid, other plug-in hybrid and another fully electric, the e-Niro, but without giving details of its characteristics.

In the outgoing Niro, the two hybrid versions have the same mechanics, which combines a 105 hp 1.6 GDi petrol engine with a 44.5 kW (61 hp), to jointly offer 141 hp and 265 Nm.

The only thing that differentiates the two is the battery, which is 1.56 kWh in the conventional hybrid and 8.9 kWh in the PHEV, which gives it an electric range of up to 49 km with which it earns the label ZERO.

For its part, the Kia e-Niro offers two variants: a 100 kW (136 hp) associated with a 39 kWh battery and a more powerful 150 kW (204 hp), its battery also having a higher capacity: 64 kWh. The approved autonomy is 289 km and 455 km respectively.

We will see if these options remain as it happened in the restyling, or mount new architectures. For example the same as hybrid variants of the new Kia Sportage, 230 hp for the hybrid and 285 hp for the PHEV (with a 13.8 kWh battery that gives it 56 km of electric range).

Regarding the electrical, I could use the mechanics of the Kia EV6 in its front-wheel drive variants, which are 170 hp and 229 hp, taking its energy from batteries of 58 kWh and 77.4 kWh respectively.

Be that as it may, we have to wait for Kia to give all the details of this new generation of its successful compact SUV, which it marks as one of its most important vehicles in its eco strategy.
