The new Suzuki S-Cross completely changes its design, but it remains the same mild-hybrid SUV as until now

The Suzuki S-Cross it is undoubtedly one of the most rational cars on the market. Suzuki has just introduced the new generation of the S-Cross with a renewed design, mild-hybrid engines and a higher level of standard equipment, with the promise of a hybrid motorization and connected services by the second half of 2022.

The design of the new Suzuki S-Cross, without being an avant-garde or original work, gives off a feeling of robustness and volume, something that the current generation of S-Cross could not fully convey.

It features a new front end with a raised hood line and black grille, plus a tailgate-integrated rear spoiler and roof rails (too small to speak of roof bars).

The large grille with respect to the front surface contributes to giving it a family look with the Suzuki Across and Suzuki Swace, despite basically being these two Toyota models with a Suzuki logo. But it also reminds me of the defunct Chevrolet Captiva.

In any case, it is a successful and current design that follows current visual codes with an ascending waistline, which reduces the height of the rear side windows. At the rear, the light and dark LED lights add a touch of originality.

Suzuki has not wanted to explain at the moment if this S-Cross uses a new platform. In principle it does not seem to be the case, since the dimensions of the new model are identical to those of the outgoing S-Cross. It measures 4,300mm long by 1,785mm wide with a 2,600mm wheelbase.

Even the tracks are the same: 1,535 mm, front, and 1,505 mm, rear. Only the height varies, the new S-Cross is 5mm lower because has lost 5 mm of ground clearance (1,750mm now versus 1,800mm for the outgoing model), but with the presence of the roof rails it ends up with the same height as the current S-Cross: 1,585mm.

On a mechanical level, the new batch S-Cross retains the 4-cylinder 1.4 liter turbo associated with a 48 V mildhybrid system. This 1.4-liter Boosterjet has 129 hp and 235 Nm delivery from per motor.

It can be associated with a 6-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive or a 6-speed automatic gearbox and the Allgrip all-wheel drive by Suzuki. In the latter case, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.2 seconds.

Suzuki’s Allgrip all-wheel drive has four selectable modes that modulate the distribution of torque between the two axles and the performance of the ABS and ESP systems depending on the mode selected. These modes are Auto, Sport (ideal for roads), Snow (for snow) and Lock, which locks the center differential to have permanent all-wheel drive, on dirt or mud, for example.

In the second half of 2022, the S-Cross will be able to have a hybrid engine higher power. Suzuki speaks of a “Strong Hybrid” as opposed to the current “mild hybrid” that will allow the S-Cross to move promptly in electric mode, as a classic hybrid does.

Suzuki has not given many details, beyond that it will be associated with a new gasoline engine and a new robotic change associated with a MGU, an electric motor that also functions as a generator, that is, a classic system like those used by Toyota. In fact, it is very likely that it is a Toyota origin engine given the agreements that unite the two brands.

On board, the dashboard is newly designed. It should be noted that the instrument panel is still analog. There is nothing wrong with it, but it is becoming less common (and that in any segment of the market). Of this new dashboard highlights the 9 inch touch screens of the infotainment system.

For now, it comes with the basic and common functions of these systems, with Bluetooth connection and compatibility with Apple Car Play y Android AutoBut in the second half of 2022, Suzuki promises that it will be able to equip a whole class of connected services.

In terms of comfort equipment, the presence of a 1,000 mm panoramic sunroof that once opened releases an opening of almost 600 mm stands out, as well as the cameras that provide a 360-degree view and the rear parking sensors.

If we talk about safety equipment, the S-Cross has automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active cruise control with stop & go function for traffic jams, lane change assist, vehicle blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert.

In terms of habitability, with identical exterior dimensions between the new model and the outgoing S-Cross, as well as a volume of identical boot (430 liters) Between the two, presumably the space on board is neither bigger nor smaller in the new S-Cross.

The new Suzuki S-Cross will be on sale in the first half of 2022. Its price should in principle remain in the same range as the current model, from 24,700 euros.
