Steam confirms its leadership position in 2021

Despite the reviews, Cyberpunk 2077 did extremely well in 2021, the proof can be found in the rankings for the best Steam games.

2021 is almost over, and it’s time to take a look back at this year’s highlights. After sharing with you our ranking of best games of the year and our biggest disappointments, then that of best indie games, it’s Steam’s turn to reveal which titles were the most played on its platform, and some are surprising. This is the case of Cyberpunk 2077, still criticized by a good number of players… on consoles.

Indeed, after a chaotic launch, Cyberpunk 2077 ranked both in the top of the worst and also the best games, depending on the medium involved. On PC, platform supported by Steam, the game conquered the critics but also the players as its universe was immersive, its engaging story and its gameplay at the height of the best role-playing games ever released. This is why the game has secured a place in the platinum category of the most played games and it is also one of the best sellers of the year.

A victory for CD Projekt’s RPG?

This category takes into account all the games having had more than 200,000 people playing simultaneously, which is not negligible. However, this victory should be qualified when we know that New World is also in this category, although the player experience has been rather poor since its launch. Indeed, the RPG of Amazon has known big server worries and still struggles to extricate herself from her complicated situation.

As for the bestsellers, a few weeks ago the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 were celebrating on Twitter the game’s rise in the Steam bestseller charts and player ratings, which has probably boosted the title’s popularity as the year ends. However, will he have landed at the foot of the tree in 2021? Nothing is less sure.

On consoles, the quality of the game is still criticized, especially on old-gen platforms. While the PS5 and Xbox Series are scarce in the market, many gamers have no choice but to favor the PS4 and Xbox One, which is not the best option. Next year, Cyberpunk 2077 could well be given a makeover thanks to some corrective patches, the first of which were deployed at the beginning of the year, but also thanks to the DLC expected for 2022.
