Schedules, favorites to win by car and where to follow each stage live

The new year 2022 has arrived and with it, as always, the first great automobile event of the season, the Dakar Rally. Saudi Arabia will host for the third consecutive season the toughest rally in the world, which this year will be somewhat shorter, although only 500 kilometers, and in which the riders will meet the marathon as soon as they start, in the third stage.

The 2022 edition is presented with many unknowns, especially by the entry of Audi with its hybrid off-road engulfing practically the entire MINI team. Toyota could start as a favorite, but the level of both Audi and MINI is unknown, while Prodrive will continue in its role of agitator.

Audi’s hybrid off-road is the great unknown of the Dakar, and the threat to Toyota

Al Attiyah Morocco 2021

To choose a favorite to victory we would have to bet on Nasser Al-Attiyah. It has already been taken to the Rally of Morocco, and its pair with Toyota seems the most balanced. They mix the experience and the speed that both Audi could lack with the MINI team but a very revolutionary car, as well as MINI without its usual equipment.

But Audi was not in Morocco and its hybrid off-road is the great unknown of the Dakar. Some think that this electrical part will give them management problems throughout the two weeks of raid, but there are those who trust that the Audi RSQ e-tron be competitive enough to fight for the Dakar.

Mini Morocco 2021

By team it will not be. They have the last two Dakar champions, Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz, plus almost the entire X-Raid team with which they dominated Toyota in the last editions. Mattias Ekström will be in charge of driving the third Audi, although in principle with much fewer options as a rookie.

The other question is where MINI is going to be. They have lost almost all their structure, but they still have the buggy that has dominated the last editions of the Dakar. Obviously, there has been a palpable drop in the level of the pilots, but will feature a veteran like Jakub Przygonski as well as a well-known newcomer: Laia Sanz.

Prodrive Dakar 2022

In Toyota, a problem that is already common in the Japanese brand could appear, and that is that there is no one in the rear in case something goes wrong with Al-Attiyah. Giniel de Villiers is already far from his best version and Yazeed Al-Rajhi is still too irregular a pilot enough to trust him in the face of a whole rally.

As if that were not enough, Prodrive will put the pepper touch again with a luxury line-up: Sébastien Loeb, Nani Roma and Orlando Terranova, and with a more evolved car in its second season. In addition, we will also be able to see in the desert the Peugeot 3008 DKR of Cyril Despres and Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi.

TVE will maintain its usual one hour space on each stage of the Dakar

Sainz Dakar 2021

To continue the Dakar we will once again have a good number of television programs dedicated to showing us the summaries and analyzing each stage. In Teledeporte there will be a program again every night, at about 9:45 p.m., directed by Marc Martí and with regular collaborators such as Judit Florensa and Pep Vila, as well as a special guest to analyze each stage.

What’s more, Eurosport will also make a half-hour summary of each stage presented by Javier Rubio, at a time similar to that of Teledeporte. Esport 3 in Catalonia and Red Bull TV through the internet will be two other options to see images of the Dakar. And of course, at Motorpasión we will monitor each stage on a daily basis with the best analysis and impressions of the protagonists.

We will have twelve stages and a prologue

The presence of the Dakar in Saudi Arabia will directly affect the schedules. Those who want follow the stages live they will have to get up early, because practically all of them will be held between the last hours of the morning and the first hours of the morning, although the longest can even go until noon.
