CES 2022: ZF and VinFast bring autonomous driving system onto the market

On the occasion of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the supplier ZF will be showing developments on the way to “Next Generation Mobility”. For ZF, this is no longer a distant vision, but a tangible goal. “The mobility of the future depends to a large extent on intelligent technologies. ZF is already preparing these solutions today so that they are available at the right time,” explains Martin Fischer, ZF board member for the Americas region.

The company points to successes in customer orders and sees itself confirmed in its strategy. The previously announced ZF technologies for automated driving, including the partially automated Level2 + driving system coASSIST, were introduced with Dongfeng in China. CoDRIVE, a further development of level 2+ driver assistance systems, also met with great customer interest. And coPILOT, a system that can be scaled up to level 4, is to be introduced in partnership with the Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast.

Turnkey solution for automated shuttle systems

“Our customers are looking for advanced technology as well as intelligence and functions that offer the consumer added value,” explains Fischer. ZF has been able to steadily expand its ADAS and AD business through orders for sensors and high-performance computers. These include the fusion of these sensor technologies, the system know-how for advanced functions and the required computing power with the ZF ProAI supercomputer.

In addition, the area of ”Transportation as a Service” is becoming more and more important with the further growth of megacities. The ZF team for automated transport systems can now offer a practically turnkey solution for the planning, operation and implementation of an automated shuttle system. This should relieve the inner cities and connect them with remote rural areas. ZF is now also introducing these mobility solutions in the USA.

Software competence for the inverter

Since the beginning of 2022, a new ZF division has combined all commercial vehicle solutions, including the former WABCO. ZF sees itself as the world’s largest supplier of commercial vehicles in terms of technologies for safety and automated driving functions as well as drive systems.

The supplier is also continuing its transformation into a software and digital-based company across all business processes. By using Microsoft technologies for the cloud, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and for data, the group will become a “cloud-native mobility service provider” that offers its customers clean, safe, convenient and affordable mobility solutions.

As an example of this, the company cites the greater scalability and modularity that ZF is bringing to inverter technology for electric drives through its software and semiconductor expertise. This is a decisive step towards increasing the efficiency, range and affordability of electric drives for the electrified future.
