After three months of standstill: Opel boss is committed to Eisenach

Before the bands restarted in Eisenach, after a three-month standstill, Opel boss Uwe Hochgeschurtz acknowledged the location again. “The future is being built here in Eisenach,” he told the “Thringer Allgemeine” (Wednesday). The employees in Thringen have been doing good work of excellent quality for 30 years. According to him, production in the plant will restart on Thursday after Opel stopped production there at the end of September due to a lack of semiconductors.

Hochgeschurtz emphasized that Eisenach, just like every other plant in the Stellantis production network, must continue to permanently demonstrate its competitiveness. With the SUV model Grandland, which is manufactured exclusively in Eisenach, the plant has the best prerequisites for this.

No outsourcing of the plants

After the production stop at the end of September, there had been speculation about further cuts at the Stellantis group. The Opel parent company temporarily examined the spin-off of the Opel plants in Eisenach and Rsselsheim from the German unit Opel Automobile GmbH, which was viewed with great concern in Thringen. After protests by the workforce, Stellantis gave up the plans in November.

Opel is the only German brand in the Stellantis auto company, which emerged from the Peugeot parent company PSA and Fiat-Chrysler. Since the takeover by PSA in August 2017, thousands of jobs have been cut in agreement with the union, with layoffs not being possible until the summer of 2025. (dpa / swi)
