Mercedes-Benz wants all its electric cars to be equipped with solar panels in just two years

Today starts the 2022 edition of the Consumer Electronic Show, the most important technology fair of the year that has already become one of the great motor shows. Much of the blame is on brands like Mercedes-Benz, who has taken advantage of this appointment to present su concept car Vision EQXX.

One of the most outstanding features of this prototype are the solar panels spanning most of the roof. This solution, which seeks to extend the autonomy of the vehicle, does It will reach the electric futures of the brand from 2024.

This has been confirmed by its own technological director, Markus Schäfer, at the subsequent press conference to the ‘premiere’ of the prototype: “Probably, in the future, the customer will be able to choose between a completely glass roof or a solar one. That is the idea for future production models, which will possibly start in 2024 with a greater availability of solar roofs in our vehicles “.

From Schäfer’s words it can be deduced that, within two years, these panels may already be available as optional equipment in models such as the well-known saloons EQS and EQE or even the EQV minivan.

All of the above will be possible thanks to the technology that Mercedes-Benz has developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. A set of ultra-thin solar cells – up to 117, in the case of the Vision EQXX – capture the sun’s energy and send it for storage in a lithium ferrophosphate battery.

Unlike other electric vehicles that also take advantage of solar energy -such as Hyundai’s Ioniq 5-, this battery does not have a connection to the thrusters, but rather it is used to supply auxiliary organs such as the air conditioner, the lights or the multimedia system.

With this, the brand of the star bets on reduce energy demand from main batteries, extending the autonomy of the latter to approximately 25 km.
